Buy/use at your own risk! The book is filled with insults, sarcasm, and jokes that would result in the manager ending up in HR answering questions. Example of a statement about ethics, “He is so morally bankrupt, I wonder if he is a sociopath.” or a comment about burn out, “You need to stop and smell the Red Bull”. One of the worst books I have seen or read on performance evaluations.

I purchased this book to help me with my employee's quarterly reviews. The phrases provided are presented on a scale from praising to critical. After reviewing the phrases in the critical section, I was appalled that any one would recommend that a manager use the recommended critical phrases during a performance review.Some examples are: under the "Appraise an Employee's Attendance" scaled phrases, a recommended critical phrase is "You either have some serious problems or you're the laziest employee I've ever had" or under the "Appraise an Employee's Verbal Communication" a recommended critical phrase is "I don't think you could communicate your way out of a paper bag" or under "Appraise an Employee's Work Quality a recommended critical phrase is "You don't know the meaning of the word quality. You don't even know how to spell it". It is very clear that the author of this book has absolutely no knowledge of appropriate phrases to use. By using such demeaning language during a performance review, a manager could find themself and their company on the wrong end of an employee's harassment lawsuit! Buy and use this book at your own risk!

I would not recommend this book as it contains many phrases that I find to be inappropriate.

I believe that people are the only long-term competitive advantage, and lifelong learning is the way to fully develop that advantage. This is the 3rd book that I have experienced written by Patrick Alain; his books are innovative, and "The Quick and Easy Performance Appraisal Phrase Book" is the latest of them. If anyone is like me, the hardest part in writing is the "getting started" part. There are many phrases to provoke thought and to "jump start" the writing process. The book is in an easy-to-read format and can be used as a reference. I look at it as I would a dictionary or an encyclopedia. The phrases range from praise to critical. As in a dictionary, there are many words and phrases that are inspiring, and there are many words that I may choose not to include in my vocabulary. This is the innovative part! Patrick Alain has cleverly, and almost humorously given us the extremes. Just as Aristotle holds the view that moral virtues are states of character lying at the mean between extremes of excess and deficiency, Patrick Alain also contrasts these extremes. It is up to the reader to wisely incorporate the essence of the phrases, and to meaningfully and thoughtfully deliver an effective review. I will look forward to next Phrase Book by Patrick Alain.

Most likely was a gigantic help when composing in excess of 30 execution audits. It has the wording to assist with those "troublesome" scenarios, notwithstanding sound expert.
