Praise for Ashley Kahn
This book, along with Kahn's book about Kind of Blue is sublime. It gets you right in the middle of the album and what it was like to make it. You can almost hear it coming from the pages. Fantastic, highly recommended!

A Love Supreme
I'd already bought this book years ago, but as a special present for a friend's birthday I purchased another. Although the book was old it was in very good condition - my friend loved it.

Love Coltrane- read this!
John Coltrane could not be described as the most demonstrative of men, not flamboyant or in any way a figure of tragedy or given to outlandish behaviour at any time. He was however a man of sincere feelings, spirituality and most importantly as devoted as anyone could be to his saxophone and the place it held in his musical output. Though the author tries, I am not sure we know much about Coltrane the man after reading the book then before doing so. Perhaps this is because he was about his work- exploring the technical limits of the saxophone and seeing how he could extend the limits of harmony and musical expression in general. What we do learn though (in fascinating detail) is how ‘A Love Supreme’ came to be, what came after and how it influenced other major artists in their work.Kahn, should be congratulated on producing such a well-researched, readable and informative book. There are many interesting photographs and snippets from interviews with the main protagonists. The material on ace producer Rudy Van Gelder is of particular note. Jazz fans of whatever hue should read this book. Not only is it a good read, but will start you off exploring- or as in my case, re-exploring Coltrane’s recordings!Highly recommended.
