Essentials of Development Economics

I plan to use this book in a development course I'm teaching. It is very heavy on micro, although the micro theory is not difficult. It pairs well with Easterly's Elusive Quest and Collier's Bottom Billion.

I've used this book twice with junior/senior level undergraduates in agricultural and environmental economics at a major state university. For the most part my course follows the chapters in this book "Poor Economics, More than Good Intentions, The Bottom Billion, etc." and I pair them readings from books on development for a general audience. I find the book very easy to teach from because of how concise and focused it is. I cover all the topics in the book in a semester, and have several lectures available for other material and class presentations. I like that the book covers important historical models (Solow, Harrod-Domar, Lewis) and how they’ve influenced thinking about development policy without going into too much detail. I particularly like the chapters on agriculture and markets, as these present some great examples of how to use models to evaluate the welfare implications of market failures. My course evaluations consistently say that the students love the material covered. The students also appreciate how compact and concise it is as well as the relatively low price, and how they’re not paying for material not covered in class (as is often the case with longer books).

I used this textbook for my undergraduate development economics class this past year. I got great feedback from my students about the book! It was very clear, exhaustive coverage of development topics, and interesting to read. For the most part I followed the book for my development lectures, but it was flexible enough that I could incorporate outside material. It also has some useful links through the website and QR codes at the end of each chapter, that students can access to provide more understanding of each chapter. I used some of these links for videos in class. Finally, the book is cost-effective for students at only around $40 new. I strongly recommend this for students of development and lecturers alike. It is also a great introductory book about the field of development!

As a graduate student, I used the first edition of this book to refresh on major development economics concepts in the summer before taking my development core courses. As an instructor, I currently use it as a main reference for undergraduate students in an introductory development economics class; the new edition has added interesting material at the forefront of the development field. Moreover, it is a book that has kept up with technology with plenty of additional material available online.Overall, I think this book is a good reference for students at multiple levels where on the one hand it introduces many important concepts in development and directs researchers in economics on how to further explore these concepts, while at the same time the book is still accessible to audiences that do not have a strong mathematical and economics background.Its price tag is also a lot lower than other development text books which might encourage students to buy the book!
