Gamelan Girls: Gender, Childhood, and Politics in Balinese Music Ensembles (New Perspectives on Gender in Music) Paperback – October 11, 2019

Gamelan Girls explores issues of child development and the ways in which different genders are encouraged/discouraged from participating in music as children, and how this effects an individual's ability and confidence to participate in music as they transition from childhood, through adolescence and into adulthood. While the issues are specific to Bali, I think they also occur in other countries.The book also expanded my understanding of gamelan music and the multiple meanings of playing music as a community, in community.
