I just answered my own question. The LED lights in this fan cannot be replaced. I called Lowe's Harbor Breeze customer service department at 1-800-643-0067 and they confirmed this. If you want a bright light, you don't want this fan.

Q: How far down from the ceiling do the blades hang?

The blades are at about 9 inches, from ceiling to the lowest point. Total hight once istalled is about 12 inches from ceiling to the lowest point (lamp).

It depends on how low your ceiling is. I have ceilings around 8 ft and a tail person would have to be careful to avoid it.

Q: can this be used with a wall mount switch rather than the remote?

My opinion is if your room is wired for a switch to operate the fan on the wall then do so and dont use the remote. Reason why is after about a year of using the remote the transmitter thing in the ceiling fan "receiver? stopped responding to our remote so we called harbor breeze/lowe's and were told that it would be about $50 to have the repair done plus shipping which is what the fan cost us. If the fan transmitter would had stopped working while in the ON position and us just using the wall switch then we could still use our fan but we just ditched it. I hope this makes sense.
