Hi, how many inches from the bottom of the stand to the bottom of the rear support when it is open?

When fully expanded, it's about 4 inches. But I have used it in a tight space (not fully expanded- about an inch), & it stays upright. I've used it to hold individual papers & books.

What is the material? Is it made of stainless steel?

It's made of a tough plastic that will stand up to a lot of use. The plastic thing across the bottom slides up and down and I find it handy for highlighting a line of data I am using or referring to. The clip at the top is adjustable so it works for 8 1/2 X 11 and 8 1/2 X 14 size paper both. I have two of them and they met my need perfectly.

Can you turn it as a landscape position?

How well does this work for legal sized paper? I've discovered that many, while say they are for legal, don't actually function on that size.

I think it's more for 8 1/2 by 11, but if you don't mind the top of your legal sized paper slightly rising at the top it might be okay. I don't know if the clamp comes off, but if it does then you'd be okay.
