how do i know if it’s working ?

If your fish tank water is clear,and not cloudy in any way it means the filter is working fine.

How often do you find you need to change these? And do you leave the old one in the tank for a few days?

We change ours every 4-6 weeks, we have 5 cherry barb and a clown plec. We don’t leave the old one in the tank but we only do a 75% water change to ensure there is bacteria for the new filter.

do you still need something to oxygenate the tank or does the filter do that? (i don’t want any real plants)

You could get a air pump and air stone which will create bubbles in the tank,and supply good oxygen.

Original filters not copies

This is not an equivalent filter, these filters are original the same if you went to any shop that sells the tank and the filter. For convenience I get them here. They work perfectly and keeps the water clean and stops toxin in tank.(As long as you do water changes monthly) .
