Midway / MacArthur Double Feature [DVD]

This set features the shorter theatrical release of Midway (1976) -- lacking the footage of the Coral Sea engagement and other scenes contained in the later TV release -- that in my opinion presents a better overall rendering of the ins and outs of the battle than the 2019 version. Obvious discrepancies aside, the widespread use of actual war footage is superior to the computerized effects of the 2019 version's battle scenes that leave the impression of being in the middle of a video game. The roles of many of the actual participants are well highlighted in the 1976 version, but not as well in the 2019 version. The only exception is the outstanding contribution of SBD pilot Lt. Richard "Dick" Best who scored fatal hits on 2 Japanese carriers in the Midway operation. Best is spotlighted in the 2019 version but is not even mentioned in the 1976 version, though his role is dramatized to some slight degree by the fictional character portrayed by Charlton Heston. Customers should be made aware that for some reason the audio of Midway (1976) does not reproduce on all equipment. I own a SONY standard DVD player that does not reproduce the audio of this film. The same goes for the stand-alone Collector's Edition of the same film. Both run well on my PC, however. No such problems with the DVD of MacArthur, which is a good performance by Gregory Peck in a passable rendering of MacArthur's wartime roles.

Midway was the perfect movie for folks who like historical accuracy in their movies. Only Charlton Heston's character is fictitious. But serves a purpose to expose how Japanese Americans were treated after Pearl Harbor. MacArthur despite starring legendary Gregory Peck pales in comparison to George C. Scott in PATTON!

Great movie, 2 discs for the best quality.(as opposed to either a double sided disc - that doesn't last long or a single one sided disc with both movies)ONE OF THE FEW TIMES HOLLYWOOD DID WHAT THEY SHOULD DO, INSTEAD OF TRYING TO SQUEEZE OUT EVERY PENNY AT THE COST OF QUALITY.

This was a bad copy of Midway. The dvd froze through the last 3 chapters of the movie. Was disappointed that I couldn't watch the movie to the end. Not worth paying shipping to send it back. Have ordered lots of movies, this is the first time I received a bad copy.

Midway is a classic. A little more hokey than Tora Tora Tora but with an all star cast it's a great movie. MacArthur isn't Gregory Pecks best performance, Moby Dick, Grapes of Wrath, but it's a decent movie.

Good quality. Movies a bit disappointing. 😟
