A great beginning
This movie has the success of being an icon. Meaning, two other basketball themed Movies seemed to have sole from Hossires; namely "Glory Rd." and "Coach Carter".

Best sports movie EVER!
My daughter needed to watch this movie for a class project. This is my husband's favorite movie of all time so my daughter chose this movie. She said hands down it is now her favorite sports movie too. She ranked it higher than a certain baseball movie filmed in a lot with no grass that all kids love. 40 years later and this movie doesn't fail to interest kids. I loved that she actually put her phone down and watched it, smiling the entire time. Kids today don't watch movies entirely. They multi-task while on their phone. But she actually watched the entire movie.

A beautiful moment in time captured in a truly beautiful film
I was born in Gary, Indiana in 1953, the year before tiny Milan High captured the Indiana State High School Basketball Championship. As most boys who grew up in Indiana, this Cinderella tale was a familiar one to me -- and the true story this film was based on.Last year, in preparation of attending the NCAA Women's Final Four in Indianapolis with my 11-year-old daughter, I purchased this Collector's Edition DVD to share with her. Although today I live a world away in the heart of Silicon Valley, I will forever remember the part of my childhood that was Hoosier Hysteria.Of what it was like to play in the annual state tourney, when every school, no matter how big or small, was thrown together into the same fire and born again every March whether their regular-season record was 25-0 or 0-25. Single elimination, do or die, winner take all.The excitement and hype leading up to the opening games of the first-round Sectional ... of the pride and joy that engulfed the entire communities of the 64 winners who advanced to the Regional ... and then, for a god-like 16 teams, the Semistate ... and ultimately, the originally named Final Four. I can't begin to describe it for you, but this film comes close, really close. My daughter has played basketball since she was in the third grade, and competes today on a traveling AAU team. She is 10 times the player I ever was at her age, but it is impossible for her to imagine a world without women professional athletes, cell phones or the Internet. And whenever I would tell her about what basketball was -- and still is -- like in Indiana, she would roll her eyes.Fortunately, I had this film to show her. And a few months later, she experienced the real thing, making the pilgrimage with me down the two-lane backroad blacktops to Milan, where we met the caretaker of the 1954 Milan Museum, Roselyn McKittrick, and later that day, dined with Bobby Plump himself, known as Bobby Chitwood in the film.I have a photograph of my daughter wearing a red Hickory High -- the fictional school in the film representing Milan -- jersey, holding the ball that Bobby arched high into the Butler Fieldhouse sky that fine and glorious day more than 50 years ago and into history. This is a rare film in that it somehow captures that special time, that place, that joy. How and why does not matter, only that it does. The tears that falll whenever I watch it are proof enough of that. This Collector's Edition compliments the original release by including recent interviews with Bobby, the two writer-producers who (as did I) attended Indiana University in the early 1970s, some deleted scenes that shed new light on the storyline, even a glorious B&W archived copy of the 1954 state championship game in its entirety.A beautiful moment in time captured in a truly beautiful film.Or, as my daughter later remarked to me, "You know Dad, basketball really is different in Indiana."

GOOD SPORTS MOVIE BUT NOT A CLASSIC ONE
I saw a lot, I mean a lot of sports movies and I think there are a several rulls to make audience love sports movie and to bacome a classic.First, the team members and the coach should have a desperate reason to win.Second, they are so poor or so humble that they got nothing to loose. The game is the only thing that they can be compensated.Third, as an option, the sportsman or the sportswoman did so many bad things like drug or had a speed ticket or slept with prostitute or something notorious that all of the audiences turned their back on her/him. Now the only thing left is himself/herself playing the damn game. This movie doesn't have anything. But it still delivers the good story.I do like Jerry Goldsmith the musician very much but this time the music kind of bothered me. It sometimes overlapped the very moment and even interrupt the scene.Gene Hackman was Gene HAckman. He was very good as usual. The good thing was we had a chance to know all the member of the team pretty well. The director made us enough to introduce the members of the basketball team to make us familier with all of them. When they play, we can notice them without looking at their uniform. That was the smart move. The last game when the director showed a bunch of shots- shooting the ball into the basket- was kind of boreing for me. I personally thought that was meaningless and timewasting moments. Also this movie lacked the really nervous moment of game playing.Even thought our team was loosing and the time was short, I was not all nervous. There are good moments like the best player who wanted to go to college so he didn't played but at the end decides to play and says that he will at the meeting and also he said that without the new coach (Gene Hackman) involved, I won't play. That was the wonderful moment.Gene was a good coach but had some issue long time ago and haven't been a coach for 10 years.People didn't believed in him till the very end. That's the only trauma in this film. Thanks for that.Anyway, this film is at least way better then the average sports film and if you like sports film, you will still enjoy this.

Great version for hi definition players
Blu Ray version brings this classic to life. I have an up-converting 4K blu Ray player that works really well with blu Ray movies.
