Works on root shoots
Kills the tree root suckers! I had cut out some type of bitter berry trees and killed the stumps last fall. This Spring, a carpet of shoots was coming up. I pruned them to an inch of the soil and dobbed the tips with Sucker Punch and shoot issue solved. After three weeks, no new shoots to report. Hopefully we are done with that issue.

Pricey but very effective!
I've been continuously fighting an insane crop of suckers all around the base of my firethorn crabapple tree since having it installed in 2014 as a relatively full-size tree. I don't know why it took me so long to seek out a remedy, but based on the good reviews I decided to give Bonide a try, and ordered the small size with included brush connected to the cap. I waited until we had a few days without rain, then carefully worked my way around the base of the tree, cutting off the suckers flush with the root and then immediately painting over the exposed area liberally with the Bonide, working a small section at a time so I didn't lose my place and miss coating any clipped areas. The built-in brush worked well and was easy to manage. Two months later, not one single clipped sucker out of the dozens I trimmed has grown back. It's been very dry this summer, so I liberally water the roots once every week to every ten days to keep the try from drying out and the solution seems to be perfectly waterproof. Very easy to use and apply.

Needs a better sprayer.
The product works well. The sprayer does not. It comes out as a skinny stream, no matter which setting I use.

Worked great!!
I was not expecting to stop the suckers as well as it did. So many growing up from the roots and they are all gone after one application. Very pleased with this product.

Works but does not last
I have used this on several trees that are prone to base sprouting; star magnolia and large leaf linden. It works reasonably well, but needs to be applied at least twice per season. I suspect it works on the suckers to which you apply the spray, but new sprouts come out and it does not prevent them, not being really systemic. At any rate, it is better than just constantly cutting suckers. BTW, don't let it freeze as I did for a partial bottle in a machine shed in wintery Iowa. It was unsprayable. It is fairly thick and not all that easy to spray on a good day. It might be better to spray some into a cup and apply with a brush. I really wished for something I could apply no more than once per season.

container is not the easiest to use, brush inside is not sturdy, the product works great

Save Your Money
This product did not work on suckers from a Sequoia redwood, and the bottle itself was also poorly designed. I cut the first batch of suckers and immediately used the product, carefully adjusting the nozzle between the spray/mist and stream settings. Unfortunately, neither setting functioned properly. Instead of producing a usable spray pattern, the bottle released an uneven, dysfunctional stream that wasted a significant amount of product while providing very little direct coverage. Even with the application issues, enough product made contact with the suckers so I expected to see at least some results. However, after several days and then weeks, there was absolutely no visible effect. The suckers continued as if nothing had been applied. I followed the application process carefully and gave the product adequate time to work. Based on my experience, the product simply failed to perform as advertised. Between the ineffective formula and the defective bottle design, this ended up being a complete waste of both time and money.
