Elder Scrolls
This is a great book. I kinda wish that it was one book with Lord of Souls, as I felt it was too short; but it's a great story. I love it. You might want to read up on the Elder Scrolls if you don't know what an Argonian is

I really enjoyed it, and am starting to read the second ...
If you're an Elder Scrolls fan, you should get this book. I really enjoyed it, and am starting to read the second one, Lord of Souls. It's a rather short book you can finish in a few sessions, and it grabs you and makes you wanna keep reading it. I like reading, but don't do it nearly as often as I should, because I have to really get pulled into the story to get into it. The author's descriptions of things is great and really makes you imagine the ES universe. It is to note, however, if you haven't played the ES games or haven't gotten into the lore, you'll probably wanna pass on this or at least play the games first as there are some things that it doesn't account for, like it doesn't say what an Argonian is, and if you never played the games you wouldn't know that those are the Lizard people of Nirn, etc, etc. But overall, I really like this book.

Leaves some questions for TES fans
WARNING:Contains some spoilersFirst, the bad: the book is short. Way to short. I was really hoping for a long, in depth book rich with details and explanation. You know, something like the Elder Scrolls games. Other than its length, the writing is the most cringe-worthy aspect. It varies from excellent and full of emotion to being a little to much like fan fiction. Its like Keyes couldnt decide on a writing style. Also, the story, while interesting, isnt all that great and could have been better. Even with these drawbacks, this book is important for TES fans to read for three reasons:1.It continues the story from Oblivion. Its really cool to hear what has happend to our beloved Tamriel in the 40 years since Oblivion. Obviously, a lot has changed. Not to give to much away, but its interesting to hear what has happend to the various factions that have been such a staple to the game series. Some have been done away with with little fan fare, others have gone out with a bang. It is sad though to hear what has happend to the various provinces, especially Morrowind. If youve played TES 3, your in for some small suprises.2. It adds some much needed chracterization to TES universe. TES games are huge open worlds with rich lore and lots of places to explore. However, most fans would agree that one thing that is sorely lacking in the games is that there are not many great memorable characters. Its seems that Keyes though so to, because he created many great characters. Sul, in particular, is really awesome.3.It really screams TES. The book is full of unpronuncable names, which is a staple of the games. But its also action packed and full of adventure. One last gripe, though: At the end of TES IV, one of the biggest things one was left to ponder was how the Empire was going to continue without an Emperor. In this book, we seemingly have one with very little explanation. It would have been nice to have a novel set before this one, to show how that happend. Oh, well. This is obviously a must read for TES fans, and it will leave you with many questions and even more excited about the book and game.

For the gamers, you'll love it.
For a start, I'll say this book will be best for those who have played the games from The Elder Scrolls series. A lot of lore from the game ties in with the meat of the book, and if you actually played the games, then you'll recognize a lot of it, and that's a bit of a tickle. If you hadn't played the games though, then the story can become more or less... confusing. The story revolves around a mysterious floating mountain of a city which terrorizes the provinces. When it attacks, it takes the souls of beings on the land below it and manipulates their bodies to do it's bidding. I found it to be an interesting idea and certainly not what was expected, which is a great thing. It seems a lot of thought was put into how the story would be drawn along. The readers are exposed to a different sort of experience. One filled with magic, potions, warriors and bizarre creatures. Instead of rushing to the end, the characters are faced with different situations which build them up over time, developing them for better, or worse... The book itself has 285 pages, but look at it as part 1 of 2, because there is a second book in progress and looking back at how good this first one was, I can say for sure that the next one's going to be even better. I'm really happy that an author finally got the nerve to write a book based off of The Elder Scrolls series. Kudos to you, Greg Keyes.And... to summarize... It's a very good read, especially if you've played both Morrowind: GotY edition and Oblivion as well, for the story coorelates with the games. I was expecting it to be longer... rather... I wanted it to be longer, it's a good thing there'll be a second book. If you haven't played any of the games from The Elder Scrolls series (they're incredible RPG's and should definitely be investigated) then check those out... They're available for the PC if you don't have consoles. Thanks for reading.

Great book... can't wait for the next one
I thought the book was superb. It's definitely tailored more towards people who are already fans of/versed with TES, but I think it could be at least worthy of three stars for someone just picking it up. It was well written, the characters are endearing, and the book is fast paced, with plenty of action (and not just armored warriors hacking and slashing, there is quite a bit of intruige) to keep things moving. It should be noted that this does appear to be part one of a two-parter, so don't expect too much in the way of resolution. Still and all, if you are a TES fan who is getting ancy (it's been three years going on four since the last game, and Bethesda said recently that while TES V is in works, don't expect it any time soon), this is a must-read!

A must read for any Elder Scrolls fan
I have been a fan of the games since Morrowind. This book is fantastic. Many books written within game universes are let down by their author’s lack of research into the source material (looking at a particular Mass Effect book…)however it is obvious Bethesda and Greg Keyes worked very closely together to make sure the lore is correct. The story is amazing, I couldn’t put the book down it’s just fantastic and as soon as I finished this book I read the second too and finished that in less than 5 hours! I just couldn’t stop once I started.A brilliant fantasy novel - please read both this and Lord of Souls if you are a fan of the Elder Scrolls games these are brilliant!!!

As an TES fan...
Lovely. I love argonians and it was a delight to read so much about them, all the details, even their hissing sounds..and Black Marsh. Seriously, for any TES fan this is amazing, the descriptions are very palpable, and all the references to the recent Tamrielic history makes it a true fan-service. Really nice to get to know more about the lore that we can't find anywhere in the games. I'm so ready to read the next one!
