The TAB Guide to DIY Welding: Hands-on Projects for Hobbyists, Handymen, and Artists

This is a great book for someone just learning to MIG weld. The author presented all the basics from understanding steel, the tools, ppe, gases and the process of welding. Some of the chapters didn't apply to MIG welding but was still very informative. I ordered another book that was too technical and a total waste of money. This book has allowed me to look at my welds and critique the problems or issues and how to correct them. I would definitely recommend this book.

I love the various projects this kit guides you through: not only do you learn more about welding with each one, but you have all these awesome and useful and beautifully designed metal pieces at the end! It gives you all the knowledge you need to go on and make so many other things... basically opening the whole world of metal fabrication up to you. I also think this would be a perfect companion book to a hobby welding course at schools or art centers or industrial arts spaces.

This book is mis-titiled. It spends only two or three chapters on welding. It should be titled something more like DIY Artistic Metal Fabrication and Art Work, with an Introduction to Metal Shop Safety, Tools, and Welding. Contains good info for an Artist who is first venturing into metal arts and shop setup/safety. Not so comprehensive coverage of welding, in and of itself.

I bought my son a mig welder for Xmas. I wanted a book that would explain how to weld using the mig handler. Most books I found were dated with very old photos and not much "how to" on mig welding. I returned what I though was the best of the lot and purchased this one. I like it! It's moder, up to date, with good color, step by step illustrations. The one thing missing, in my opinion, is cross-sectional close ups of good and bad welds and their causes of failure.

My order arrived today. I payed $18.40 for a new copy of the "TAB Guide to DIY Welding". It looks to be new, but a large section of the upper right hand corner of the cover and the first 60 or so pages are severely bent outward and won't lie flat, even after I've tried to bend them back the other way. When I order a new book, I expect it to arrive in pristine condition, not like it's been thrown around in the back of someone's pickup. On first inspection, it appears to be a good book with the kind of information I was looking for, so I'm not unhappy with the purchase, just the condition that it arrived in.

I've wanted to get into welding for years and finally Santa got me a welder for Christmas. As with any new tool or toy, I'm looking for this to do with it. This book is a helpful resource on projects and the basics.

I got this book for my husband and he's reading it and liking it. He did mention that it's kind of for beginners and he could skip some stuff, but is reading it all. My husband doesn't weld much and we have a friend who welds as a profession - a needed activity for things that go wrong in this remote area of our state.

Great book for all to learn the art of welding

Ein tolles Buch für alle, die den Einstieg ins Schweißen suchen. 10 überwiegend sehr gute Kritiken im amerikanischen Amazon und ein niedriger Preis haben mich zu diesem Buch überredet. Ich hatte nicht erwartet, so viel und so gut aufbereitete Information darin zu finden. Es gibt so Tage, an denen ich mich Frage, warum Amerikaner so viel bessere Sachbücher schreiben als Deutsche. Dieses Buch löst so einen Tag aus. Hintergründe zum Schweißen, eine ausführliche Darstellung der Sicherheitsaspekte, praktisch relevante Darstellungen zum Gasschweißen, zum Plasmaschneider und zum MIG-Schweißen, zu allgemeinen Werkzeugen die man in der Metallbearbeitung braucht, zum Umgang mit Schrotthändlern und Metallhändlern zum Erkennen von Stahl auf dem Schrottplatz und und und. Hier ist sogar das Kapitel zur Flex und das zum Schleifbock lesenswert. Oberflächenbearbeitung kommt etwas kurz - da hätte ich auch gerne noch mehr zu gelesen, aber was verlange ich auf 350 Seiten für 18 EUR? Ein vollständiges Buch zum Schweißen also? Nein. Beschrieben wird das Schweißen mit dem Schweißbrenner und mit MIG-Schweißgeräten. E-Handschweißen und WIG-Schweißen werden nicht beschrieben. Das ist wirklich schade, denn ich hätte gerne auch das doppelte ausgegeben, um dazu etwas von diesem Autor zu lesen. Auch wird nur das "künstlerische" Schweißen beschrieben, also keine Besonderheiten für tragende Konstruktionen, wasserdichte Konstruktionen oder das Schweißen von Edelstahl oder Alu etc. Ich habe mich letztlich für ein E-Handschweißgerät entschieden. Technik also, die nicht im Buch besprochen wird. Das "Drumherum" im Buch war aber so wertvoll für mich, dass ich das Buch jederzeit wieder zum Kauf empfehlen würde. Zu dem Preis erst recht.

Good for beginner !

This is a substantial, well presented book. If you can't get to 'evening classes', Mr Morley's book takes you through what he would have said to you as a student - he assumes that you are an utter novice to the workshop but who wants to weld. One might think that most would understand basic workshop practice (and how to use a hacksaw) before wanting to weld. The first half of the book is 'health and safety' in the workshop, this is steel and these are other types of welding. The second half is 'things to make' to practice techniques - they will cost money and it is doubted if anyone will be found that wants them (a bit like school metalwork, does my wife want a BBQ made from an old oil drum? - will you volunteer to tell her what it is ? ). There is really only 1 chapter on MIG welding and that stresses that you should follow the instruction manual that comes with your welder (assuming that it is not Chinese or second-hand and missing). I have a Chinese m/c, hence 3 stars.
