The GREGG Shorthand Manual Simplified

Excellent presentation, design, printing and binding.
This very nicely printed book, " The GREGG Shorthand Manual Simplified ", is a pure delight to have and hold. Even if the subject matter wasn't so well presented, it would still be a great little possession to have on the shelf.Concerning the content, there's a very useful comparison of the various editions of this book since 1888 on the wikipedia page about Gregg shorthand. As they say there, the fastest version of Gregg was the 1916 edition, with which stenographers could reach 280 words per minute. With this "Simplified" version, people could get to 150 words per minute. Then with the later Jubilee edition (which I bought myself some time in the 1970s), people could get less speed than that. It seems that what happened was that every time the brief forms were reduced in number, the system got easier to learn, but slower to use.I did a side-by-side comparison of all of the theory paragraphs of this Simplified second edition (1955) and the later Jubilee second edition (1971). Almost everything was essentially the same, although the order of presentation in these two editions is utterly different. I don't think they could have scrambled the order of the paragraphs more thoroughly than they did.One really obvious difference that I found between the theory in the Simplified and Jubilee editions was the absence of the disjoined word-endings in the Jubilee second edition. In this Simplified second edition, disjoined word-endings are in paragraphs 61, 305 and 309.Also missing in the later Jubilee edition are Ow before N, N-N and Moun (paragraphs 202, 203, 204), Jent, Jend, Pend, Pent (paras 233, 234), word-beginnings After-, Short-, Ship-, Incl- (paras 225, 249, 323), Is Not, Was Not in phrases (para 256), word-endings -ify, -use, -cate, -gate, -ntic, -ology, -pose, -position, -less, -field, -port, -ford, -ton, -town (paras 266, 363, 370, 418, 419, 451, 459, 466), various consonant Omissions (paras 304, 306, 307, 308, 317), compound word beginnings (para 357), Understand, Understood, Misunderstand, Misunderstood (paras 391, 392). These are all bonuses that you get in this Simplified edition, which were apparently dropped from the later Jubilee edition.By contrast, I found almost nothing in the later Jubilee edition which was not in this Simplified edition. The only later edition additions which I found were the word-endings -quent and -titute (para 364).In my opinion, this Simplified edition is probably better than the later editions. If you wanted to, you could just ignore the extra stuff which I have indicated, in order to be consistent with later editions. The detached/disjoined word-endings are a particular difference which you will notice if you read " Alice in Wonderland in Gregg Shorthand ", for example, which is written in the older style including these detached/disjoined word-endings, and using short forms which are absent from later editions. Conclusion:I can't imagine a better book than this one for learning Gregg shorthand.

Great Instruction Book
I studied shorthand in high school years ago and enjoyed it. As an adult I used it to take notes at college which helped a lot. Now many years later I still use it some when listening to speakers, making notes for myself, but only remember a few "words". I ordered this book for it sounded it would be most like the kind of shorthand I studied back then. It is not only very much the kind I studied (shorthand changed several times over the years) and I now can use it to remember the word/signs I used then and add more as needed. This book is a great find and a wonderful one to use with practice.

Shorthand
I bought this to teach the grandboys shorthand. Well, they don't even teach cursive, everything is on laptops so I guess it is a dying art.

Look for Copyright Date
Book is in perfect condition and arrived on time. However, I did not read/notice the copyright date. I thought it was an updated book. It was 1955.

A very good book for a fantastic system.
When I was in my World History class last year, I could hardly keep up with the teacher spoon-feeding notes. I would scribble and scribble, but I would still be a note behind. Over the summer, I learned about shorthand. I purchased this book and learned the system. Now, I am able to write down mostly everything that this year's history teacher says. Unlike what one reviewer said, the book does teach the location of Gregg letters on a line. For instance, it says that a "b" should vertically cover the entire line, and "p" approximately half the line. By looking at the tables like that on paragraph 217, on page 105, it clearly shows where the strokes should be on the line and what words should look like.At first, I thought that I could learn it by just looking at the rules and writing, but I found that after reading every page of reading and writing practice, I could read and write shorthand much more efficiently. With a decent amount of studying and practice, I eventually got a very nice speed. Also, since no one in the entire school has even heard of shorthand, it is very handy for note privacy. Its printing is very good, and I am quite proud to have it in my library.

I learned from this in the 60's!
I used this for two years back in the 60's. I still retained some of the brief forms, but needed an update for my new board position. I have actually enjoyed relearning shorthand which is something the high school me would never have believed!

International quality book helpful for SSC Stenographer aspirants
After qualifying tier-1 of SSC Stenographer Examination, I had to prepare for the next stage which is Stenography skill test. After extensive research, I found out that two methods of Stenography are best:1. Pitman System2. Gregg SystemThe Pitman system is the most popular system among both teachers and students in India. When I started searching any institute for learning stenography, I found all of them were teaching Pitman and none of them were following Gregg system. The sad part was even without knowing anything about Gregg, they tend to make students afraid about learning it by saying "You should follow Pitman as everyone is doing the same otherwise you will get no help and you will be left out...". It was evident that they were taking side of Pitman system only to attract the student to enrol with them. As none of them were ready to teach Gregg system, I had to choose the path of self-learning.But why I was so stern in learning Gregg system only ? because Gregg system is very straight forward and requires very less effort as compared to Pitman system. After following few YouTube channels on both systems, I learned the basics of both so as I can distinguish their features in a better way. It was clear that there isn't any scope for the Gregg system being adopted by coaching institutes in near future. There are two reasons for that. First one, both teachers and students are afraid in learning and following something new here.Second reason is, Gregg is easier and requires less time to learn, it requires less number of hours for the tutor to spend on students, which means shorter duration course... which means less fees. The tougher the skill appears to students, the more they are willing to pay for the course. Now the challenge was getting study material for the Gregg system. The Youtube channels are insufficient and somewhat lack complete coverage of the system. If you want to learn from PDF, the PDF is available for only the old versions of this system which requires more effort than the Simplified version and has many unnecessary symbols. If you want to buy book, this is the only book available for the Simplified Gregg version on Amazon India .One thing that repels many is the price of the book. The Pitman book is available in just Rs.116 but this book is more than twelve times costlier. This is so because it is an imported book. I have attached image of the page where it is mentioned that this book was printed in USA. Price is not mentioned on the book, but the price is comparable to the cost of ordering this book from USA (price+shipping). Obviously the paper and print quality is best. The language used in the book is easy to understand and lessons are arranged in a very systematic structure. If someone has less time to learn Shorthand, this book is definitely useful for them.I bought the used version but the condition is like a new book.Last but not the least, The Delhi Book Store, Thanks for keeping stock of international books in both new and used conditions which is very helpful for students.

Lovely edition to have of the GREGG SHORTHAND SIMPLIFIED Manual.
I am glad I purchased this recently, as it's great for refreshing my mind on some of the rules of GREGG SHORTHAND SIMPLIFIED. I can still say I have the majority of this version in my mind - it very quickly comes back with the GREGG SHORTHAND MANUAL.
