The Gardener's Guide to Cactus
Scott Calhoun gives the reader a wealth of information about each of the 100 selected cacti. He introduces each cactus with a short but concise description and excellent photo. He headlines each selection with natural habitat, zone hardiness, the mature size and flowering season which allows the gardener a quick reference. A detailed description highlighting the structure of the cactus shape, color, spines, flowers and fruits follows, with suggestions on planting and placement in your landscape as well cultivation. He also addresses issues with pests as well as how to protect your cactus when unexpected weather conditions occur. References to nurseries and planting zones are near the end of the book. This book a wonderful resource for those of us who are moving to the Southwest. Thank goodness I read this before I drowned my cactus with over watering!

Doris Dorough Sigler S. Texas studies
For over 15 years I have been studying the native plants in South Texas. I have used this book for references many times and it is one of the best guides I've ever had.

Good basic information.
If you like Cactus and want to grow them, this is a great basic book to start with. I must say, if you've been collecting cactus for some time and have basic skills of planting, repotting, feeding, etc...then this book is probably not for you. BUT...if you are just beginning, or have tried and not done too well, this is a wonderful book for you to pick up, own, and keep handy for when you run into problems.A really good reference. Buy it and you will be happy...and have it handy when you have questions.Really good book.

Was nice book but not what was looking for.
It wasn't what I expected as far as content. There was plenty of info. But I wanted a bigger number of plants.

Great visually and informative
I really like this book. One of the best things about this book is every cactus discussed in the book has a color picture of that cactus. Every cactus is defined by native habitat, mature size, hardiness zone, and flowering seasons. Also, included is the culinary value, design suggestions, cultivation and notable varieties, forms, and subspecies. The cactus in this book are the most common ones you see in gardens. Now I would like to see this author create a book of the less common and more exotic cactus I have been collecting in the wild.

Handy book for designing cacti gardens
I bought the kindle version of the book as it was economical and a handy portable guide. This book is writen for Western gardens, however it provides useful information for selection of cacti for other regions. The pictures are good and also provides information as to culinary use. The author provides specific charactristics of varieties in additionj to species bgiving common names and scientific nomenclature.

Good information, learned by experience
This book gives lots of options for growing cactus in climates you wouldn't normally think to grow them or think they would survive the winter. It provides good, detailed information on a wide variety of plants.
