I was expecting a high quality, accurate reference book ...
I was expecting a high quality, accurate reference book as it was published by the American Horticultural society. However it was less than expected. For example it is a rambling document comprised by many disjoint snippets of information. The snippets appeared to be from different sources or authors with some containing somewhat questionable information (for example their blanket statement to NOT use pruning paint when pruning trees.. I agree in some cases pruning paint is not indicated but in others it is a valuable tool). In at least one image the tree show was not what the caption indicated (the caption discribed the picture to be a white pine.. What was shown was a "pruned red pine" that was pruned to be a Christmas tree). There is valuable information in the text but beware of the pictures and second source any of the information to be sure it is valid.

An apsiring homesteader
I intend to homestead someday and as I learn more about fruit trees, and all plants for that matter, it became clear pruning and training is key to being a successful homesteader and gardener. This book does an excellent job depicting different pruning techniques with detailed descriptions and captions. The index also makes it easy to look up certain species. Whether you are reading this to improve your knowledge of pruning, or you simply need a text of reference on the shelf, this is the book for you. Hope this helps!

Great resource: learn a little or use as an important reference for detailed management.
An excellent resource for beginners and experienced home gardeners. I particularly like the early sections about plant biology and principals of pruning. The later sections detail individual trees, shrubs, and climbing plants identifying when and how to prune, whether hard pruning for renovation or refinements to train a plant doing well. This will remain an important resource for me for many years.

Great details for specific trees
Very informative with great illustrations. The downside is that many of the trees or shrubs that this book gives individualized guidance on do not grow in South Florida. Perhaps if you're in a more temperate zone, it can be a great resource for what you actually have in your yard. Still, I have seen few resources in other books or online that give such species-specific advice.

Wonderful book for beginner to advanced!!!
My husband used this as his "go to" pruning book. His son, also an avid gardenerthreatened to "misappropriate" the book during a visit. I bought him his own copy, and he loves it. My husband died a few months ago, so the local horticultururalistlooked in on the orchard and other trees, shrubs and roses. He perused the book during a break, saying how comprehensive it was: for beginners to those in the profession. I bought him this book for Christmas in appreciation for all he had done. The new paperback version is as comprehensive as the hardback version, and now more affordable for those wanting "The Ultimate Guide" to pruning and training. If you do any pruning, this is definitely a "BUY"!!!

Best Pruning Book
Christopher Brickell writes the very best pruning instructions. In other books the shown plant never looks like the one I am trying to prune. He explains what and why so that you can use the information for any shape of plant.

great pruning information
The amount of information in this book is incredible. It covers pruning almost any type of plant or style that I can think of (at least for landscape use). The book is arranged by type of pruning, giving an overview of how to accomplish each type. Then it also gives more specific information for a variety of plants that would fall under that category of pruning. Great for beginners or for seasoned professionals who want to expand their knowledge.

Very Comprehensive!
This is the most helpful pruning book I have found, ever! Very comprehensive and for the home gardener, a must. Whether you are a gardener just starting out or a seasoned 'expert', this book with great picutres and illistrations guides you through what to do and when to do it. The book is catagorized in a way you can find the type of shrub or tree, bush or vine you need to review and then the directions are very clear. I recommend this book whole-heartedly.
