The Looney Tunes Treasury

A blast from the past
The media could not be loaded. This book is a great tribute to the some of the most classic animation characters ever created - the Looney Tunes gang - from Bugs Bunny to Marvin the Martian. It brings back good memories of watching these cartoons back in the past. Although I can't remember exact stories, I still can remember the crazy antics of the characters. The author Andrew Farago, curator of the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco, has done a great job in putting this treasury together. The book is filled with art, animation stills, and funny autobiographies written by the Looney Tunes characters themselves. You can read in their own words about their rise to fame, the jealousy among cartoon co-characters, and other hilarious jokes. I still get a chuckle out of seeing Tweety in Sylvester's sandwich, knowing seconds later Tweety would somehow escape. Also included are some mementos like postcards, sticker book, Porky Pig mini-comic, a Tasmanian Devil mask and other cool stuff. This book is a blast from the past. Recommended for fans of classic animation.(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

Now I have a matched set
By matched set, I mean a Looney Tunes Treasury to go along with my Hanna Barbera Treasury. Great historical notes and extremely colorful, just like the cartoons of my youth. I'm a child of the 70's but Looney Tunes played a big part of my childhood. Least I got in before the mass censorship of cartoons began. I eagerly await the day WB puts out every Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies cartoon in one huge DVD set or not so much as huge blu-ray set. Haven't finished reading it but hoping the book covers the last era of Looney Tunes, the "Seven Arts" era with characters like Cool Cat, Bunny & Claude and Norman Normal.

A bit of a mixed bag, but the good vastly outweighs the bad.
I'm a sucker for these "vault" books, and own a couple of others. The concept is one that allows for plenty of potential for fun, and it's fantastic when it's executed well. When the execution is not so great, well, it's still pretty good, as it turns out. This book is divided into small sections focusing on individual characters, and each section is written as though the character in question is giving an interview. Frankly, I found this pretty annoying, and I wound up skipping most of the text after a while. Thankfully, there is plenty of art and pack-in goodies to more than make up for that. The books' excellent visual design carries your eyes across each page, letting you drink in all the bright colors and character art. The pack-in items vary in their entertainment value, but most of them are pretty fun. My favorite is the Acme catalog, which has very nice art and some pretty funny descriptions for each item.I wouldn't recommend dropping a whole lot of money on this book, but there are plenty of copies going for very reasonable prices. I paid less than five dollars for mine, and if you find it anywhere in that range, it's an absolute steal! This isn't the best of the "vault" books I've checked out, but it's a lot of fun, and definitely worth owning.

A Real Treasure!
This is a very nice book made with great care in a deluxe edition... It contains a good selection of the most famous characters of looney tunes... the original sketches, the colourful pages and the extra materials included (posters, stickers, masks, etc) is a delight for the eyes and the heart. If you are fan of looney tunes and lover of good books, this publication is for you...

Gimmicky Book Providing a Shallow Read But Nice Pictures
Aside from the gimmick of removable keepsakes the real treasure is seeing some of the original art included in this book, especially because there aren't enough books out there with Looney Tunes original art. Though not overly filled, there's sufficient original art included of various production sketches, storyboard drawings and background paintings. For the inclusion of animation art the book alone is worth getting. In terms of story the book straight out blows. I got the Looney Tunes Treasury hoping for more background information about the creation of these legendary cartoons and their makers. For the Looney Tunes Treasury the writer Andrew Farago thought it would be funny if the Looney Tunes characters tell their life story as if they're real characters. Guess what, I didn't find it so funny. Reality is mixed with fiction so from an informational point of view, you have to read through the made up stories to get to the info. And because the facts are surrounded by fantasy it makes the facts also look like a joke. If you were hoping for a fun read then it'll probably suit you. But for information purposes it has little value.Halfway the book I stopped reading and just looked at the pictures, because those are the only good thing about this book. The keepsakes themselves are also very weak. In the treasure books from Disney and Hanna Barbera there actually were keepsakes worthy of including because they replicated some vintage material, like a copy of a hand written letter from Disney himself, a cel up, vintage toy advertisement etc. The keepsakes included in the Looney Treasury are contemporary and no single vintage item to be spotted. The items also have no relation with the surrounding text and are added purely as a decoration, therefore making it soley gimmicky. On a scale of 1 to 5 stars I give it a total score of 3: 5 stars for the pictures, 2 for the text and 2 for the keepsakes. If you're a Looney Tunes fan then you simply can't miss this book. For kids it's also fun, but for anyone else with a slight interest in the Looney Tunes or cartoons in general there are better books available.

A gift for Looney Tunes fans!
'The Looney Tunes Treasury' is the perfect gift for all fans of the classic Warner Bros characters. Here we have a chunky volume, which is visually stunning. It's pages are littered with lots of high quality graphics, a variety of extras like cartoon scripts and original character act. But what makes it more so unique and interesting is the removable memorabilia, which includes vintage Porky Pig/Sylvester and Tweety comic books, Speedy Gonzales' postcards, Pepe Le Pew Valentines Day cards, a Tasmanian Devil mask, and even an 'ACME products' catalogue.Whilst it doesn't completely provide a factual history of these legendary characters (i.e: a wealth of background information, but then again, there have been publications in the past which have done all of that brilliantly), writer Andrew Farago has decided to let the toons themselves tell their own stories first hand. Staying true to their nature (and using actual dialogue from the shorts themselves), reading the writings of cartoon heros like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Foghorn Leghorn, Granny and all the gang made me laugh out loud, and I could practically hear Mel Blanc's voices for each of them in my head. This was a very entertaining way to read up on the stars of the shorts, but perhaps it might have been a good idea to include a least of brief run down of each character, providing the basic statistics, even if it was just on the side.I was particularly excited to see contributions from minor/one-off characters like Michigan J. Frog, the criminality underrated Ralph Wolf & Sam Sheepdog, and Witch Hazel, all of whom are showcased and sandwiched between the famous toons. It should also be noted that Andrew is very good about crediting the directors and artists who were behind the scenes. This beautifully presented book, which is introduced by animator Bob Clampett's daughter Ruth, will appeal to both adults and children alike, it's fun and interactive, and above all an affectionate celebration of all things Looney Tunes. It provided me with a very entertaining afternoon, which I know won't be just the once.
