Leroy Ninker worked at the Bijou Drive-In in the concession stand. This is the story about how he got a buddy and lost him. He had a dream about being a cowboy. He had a cowboy hat and boots. He had a lasso, but he needed a horse. All the cowboys on the picture screen had horses. Beatrice handed him a newspaper ad. What did it say? What was it about? You get to read/listen to find out. I highly recommend this book. Enjoy the journey Leroy had finding a new friend. I know I did.

Poetic cowboy with heart!
Is it realistic of a cowboy and a horse without a stable? In this book it is. The short man wanted to be a cowboy. He has the hat, the lasso, and the boots. But no horse. So when he does get one, he learns to be outspoken with compliments. But when a disaster happens, what will be do?This short children's book is nice with wonderful illustrations. If I don't mind some things, the good vibes transcends the whole story. Definitely a wonderful relationship between a cowboy and his horse.

Funny...but you gotta embellish
I'm not sure my son and I appreciated this book in the manner the author intended, but we had great fun. First, find Sid the Science Kid on Youtube. Second, perfect imitating his voice. Third, use this voice when Leroy Ninker speaks and be prepared to feel like super-dad as your 9 year old rolls in his bed from laughter. We are still calling each other Leroy Ninker. Again, probably not what the author intended, but come on...Leroy is a grown man who lives in a tiny apartment, want's to be a cowboy, feeds his horse spagehtti, and has the most beautificus horsicus in all of the whole wide world...Maybelline. Oh Ma-be-weeenn I wuv you.One thing I didn't understand, and maybe there's a sequel out there, is Leroy Ninker's quote about once having been a thief and a bad man. What did he rob...candy stores? ;-)If a director out there was willing to eschew political correctness, and not worry about offending, this would be a hilarious kid's movie.

Enjoyable for reader and the child
Leroy Ninker is a book that your kid and you will enjoy. Read it out loud to different age groups and they all enjoy it. Four year old had a bit of a hard time following along but she enjoyed it. The pictures are great

My students loved this book - even the boys!
This is such a great book. The story is just the right amount of quirky and funny. If you like offbeat, quirky, eccentric characters this is the story for you, The fact that it's a Kate DiCamollo makes the whole story even better.

I thought it would be perfect. It is a really cute book
A couple of years ago, we bought a set of Mercy Watson books by this same author. We have a soon-to-be 7-year-old who is crazy for cowboys, so when I saw this short chapter book with some of the same characters, I thought it would be perfect. It is a really cute book, decently easy to read, but still a bit of a challenge to keep him interested. After he finished reading this one, I tried to find more about Leroy Ninker, but it looks like the next couple of books are about other characters. We'd love to see more about this little guy. In the meantime, we'll probably buy those next books, because the style of these books (like the Mercy Watson books) is just so fun.
