Sony telephoto lens
Sony has discontinued their alpha series dale's and lenses, so the only available pieces are used. The lens I purchased is in excellent condition, it looks brand new. It came with both covers and hood. All that was missing was the box and owners manual, which wasn't an issue for me. The lens is very clean and operates perfectly. All in all, it was an excellent purchase for an item that is no longer available new.

Remarkable for the price
Amateur photographer for many years. Using a100and a7 bodies. Have used it now for landscape, wildlife, sports and portrait shots. All are handled well. Zoom is smooth. Autofocus quick and reasonably quiet. Images are sharp. For less than $200 it is a great value.

Would buy again
Solid lens with a moderate price tag.the focus at full range (300mm) sometimes searches a bit and takes a couple full scans to get a solid lock.focus motor is slightly louder than the standard 18-55mm sony SAM.pictures stay crisp all the way through the focal length.my experiences are almost all outside during high light hours so i dont have much to comment on low light performance. If this lens disappeared from my bag i would buy another one.

Can't beat price performance of this one
I am very pleased for what this lens is capable of at this price. Optical quality is good, focusing speed is fast enough once you are in the range of your target scene. It will hunt for focus sometimes, but I believe this is more my lack of choosing proper focus area and aim. Build quality is also very decent, plastic is solid and rubber grip on rings is solid as well. Obviously, it is not the fastest lens for low light, but that is understandable at this price, lens diameter and zoom range.

useful lens
I got this lens to upgrade from my 55-200mm lens that I used for bird photography. The new lens worked perfectly and got good photos and larger views of the birds. Of course the 300mm setting makes it more challenging to follow moving birds, but I expected that. The larger and heavier lens size was not a problem. There were no mechanical problems reported by other reviewers.

badly misfocusing
My copy was always misfocusing at all FLs and that couldn't be adjusted. It's better at short distances, some images are useable, it's absolutely terrible at infinity, all images are blurry all the time. It's obviously defective. It wouldn't be an problem, all manufacturers have a small percentage of duds, but I read the other people encountering the same issue, which tells me Sony has a real QA problem. I've bought dozens of lenses for the last few years from many manufacturers, this was the only lens with such obvious and serious defect.

Nice size, fine performance
I am very pleased with this lens. I am not a serious photographer but have been taking pix for 50 years with all types of cameras and lenses. Using it on a Sony Alpha A77 it has been just fine. It seems fairly "small" for a 300mm zoom, but the camera is big and it all balances nicely making for pretty good hand held shots.Twisting the barrel to zoom is not buttery smooth so I gave it 4 stars. It's not stiff, just a bit variable. It's a good lens for a good price.

I'm using this on the Sony A7Rii with the LAEA3 adapter and cannot be more pleased. Are there longer Sony lenses with better IQ
Sharp and light!!! I'm using this on the Sony A7Rii with the LAEA3 adapter and cannot be more pleased. Are there longer Sony lenses with better IQ? No doubt but they will weigh a ton and cost a fortune and honestlythe SAL 500mm is geared toward wildlife. The A7Rii can do anything but its forte is landscape....and in that vainI'm found 99% of the time carrying wide angle lenses with it. That's where the 55-300mm comes in. Say I'm on a hiketo landscape a beautiful waterfall, so the wide angle lenses are packed, but what if I want something just in case I encounterwildlife and don't want the weight of a super telephoto=get the 55-300mm and put it in your pack. It's a great lens and adaptedfor the FE A series it does well via the LAEA3 adapter. It won't set speed records but its fast enough.
