All my dreams come true
When I played the original in 1997 my life was changed forever. Final Fantasy 7 defined my life as a gamer, it took me from playing games like Tomb Raider and Porsche Challenge on the PS1 into an avid lover of RPG. Over the years Iโve completed all the main FF series from 7 through to 15 (part way through 15) along with any sequels... I am a seasoned FF player. It then led me into the delights of the Fallout series amongst others. This was a game that led me to have my PlayStation 1 confiscated because I spend so much time on FF7 that I failed my GCSE mock exams as I was playing it too much (only to find my dad secretly playing it when I wasnโt allowed). For many of us FF7 was and still is life and I like so many have been dreaming of a remake for 23 long years! So down to my thoughts on the remake... Firstly itโs a beautiful game. Watching that opening sequence in full cinematic glory literally made me cry. The visuals whether they are in FMV or gameplay are stunning. The original games characters were pretty much expressionless and now suddenly you see every twitch of an eyebrow and every subtle expression change. Itโs incredible. I was expecting the characters to exactly resemble their design from the FF7 Advent Children movie but some of them differ slightly, Tifa for example is facially more anime looking. Secondly gameplay... I am 4.5 hours in. While I had my reservations on a change in battle system I think the game is better for it. The original was all turn based whereas the remake is similar to FF15. I like it. For me I donโt think I would be able to play turn based games anymore, Iโm too used to RPGโs like fallout and now I favour action battles over turn based. You can use menus to select different actions which is reminiscent of the earlier battle system, which I like, it makes it still feel like FF7 but with more control. Also itโs worth adding that you can either take full control of the other characters in the party like Tifa or Barret or you can just give them commands. I prefer to play as Cloud as much as possible so favour the command system. Story... so itโs hard to comment at this point because they have drawn out the story to make a longer game, this is fine from what Iโve seen so far the story seems spot on. The first reactor mission is virtually identical to the original game with A few add ins. Iโm not going to spoil the game for anyone by commenting further but certain elements that creep in later in the game have been brought forward to bring in more of Clouds narrative which would have been needed given how square Enix have decided to present the game. The bit I donโt like... I didnโt research the remake simply because Iโve been waiting so long for this it was hard reading how it kept getting pushed back and how square Enix wanted to do other things despite the outcry for this game. So I didnโt know it would be split into more than one instalment (Iโve read it will be at least 3 parts). I donโt feel that this should have been done in this way and I feel the makers are cashing in on this much beloved game and characters. Apparently FF7 remake takes around 40 hours to complete and is 5 hours worth of the original game. There is no reason the entire game couldnโt have been made in one go. To compare with Fallout 4 which is 300+ hours gameplay this isnโt really acceptable. I feel like Square Enix are exploiting the fans to make as much money as possible. I had to buy a PS4 especially for this as Iโm an Xbox user and Iโm guessing Iโll be having to buy a PS5 as well. Yes this game will be on Xbox in a years time but I canโt wait that long, I tried, but ended up lasting 1 whole day. This I am not happy with at all. That said it doesnโt detract from the fact what has been made is absurdly amazing. Also where is the battle victory song??? In summary this is a great game and I would recommend it to anyone whether they played the original or not. If you havenโt played the 1997 release I would recommend do so first. This is because Final Fantasy 7 the Remake isnโt just a remake I would say itโs a reboot as well. I say this because yea all the elements of the original are all there you have a lot of added content as well to pad the game out. If you are considering this I would say... just buy it!

The best final fantasy yet!! In gaming history!!
FF7 remake has surpassed the expection of an incredible game which has surpassed the original FF7 hands down with a mass of sales for atmosphere and pure gameplay improvements a vast improvement in comparison to the Original PS1 game which had some major flaws due to it being turn based and with the outdated graphics on the PS1 and limited animations and movements due to the tanky controls not to mention the annoying disc changes (3 discs.) Remake has set the bar very high it's a fantastic remake and they've improved upon it with action style of combat Instead of turn based combat but the Atb gauge is still present which keeps it somewhat true to the orignal, but it's good that there are changes to combat system which was needed in present modern day remake of this game, why make a turn based game with a small following of fans and mixed reviews when you can make an action Rpg that sells and generates more fans and sells high sales which is what has been done here and was really needed. It's a pity Sega didn't choose the same direction for shenmue and give it a full remake rather then the remasters with bad audio that had not been remastered or tweaked, final fantasy 7 remake is an incredible retelling of the original game with a different outcome to certain events and fates which I won't spoil for any one who haven't played it so if anyone does still enjoy the original or remaster they can still play it. That's what makes the remake all the better, The best FF game in history is not an understatement in this rating it's totally true. Let's hope that the 2nd and final chapter 3 will be just as good if not better. This will be a 3disc game like the original but much much better.

All these years later
Played the original as a kid and to this day its still the best game I've ever played. To say I was excited for this is an understatement. It arrived this morning the day before release so I was like a child on Christmas morning exactly like when I first played the original on PS1. The first thing I noticed is how incredible the soundtrack is. Its all the original music but it just sounds brilliantly nostalgic. The visuals are also incredible. This games brings to life characters that only lived in block form previously. All of a sudden its like they've become real. The gameplay is vastly different than the original. You can pick classic mode which I have been told plays more like a turn based game but this puts the game on easy difficultly which I didn't want. The last thing I want is to wait 20 years for a game and then to just rush through on easy. So far the combat is a little button bashy with only the one boss making me use my brain. Its still fun don't get me wrong but I'm hoping as the game goes on just bashing square becomes less effective. The story is the same as the original but plays at a different pace. You are introduced to a certain character here much sooner than in the original. I'm glad its slightly different as wheres the fun in knowing whats at every turn. So far this game lives up to the hype and my lofty expectations. I cannot wait to experience more of it and if it continues like it has started then its going to be a fun ride.

Spoiler free opinion
So it finally arrived....the game isn't for all, some new folks will fall in love with it, core fans might hate it and some won't look at it twice. Let me explain. I absolutely fell in love with the game after the demo, it's crisp, the characters are quite true to their nature, beautiful and the sound track is amazing. It's a remake not a remaster so we were expecting major changes including the materia mechanics, the new combat system (not really turn based anymore), the side quests, game play overall and some other things like mini games. I really enjoy the game, after 60 hours, I felt the first chunk of ff7 was pretty good and solid. I did all the side quests, enjoyed the views and enjoyed kicking Shinra ass. However.....sometimes the camera angle was a bit wonky. I felt the side quests were a bit lame, I didn't really like the way you could summon and I think the main story could have been a bit longer (all opinion based). Overall I thought it was a good shot at a remake and pleasantly surprising too. I do recommend this game to old and new fans. You can't go wrong with a Cloud. Enjoy!

Have faith... it's stunning.
It was worth the wait. Square Enix was very upfront for a long time about the whole remake being part 1 of many - so I wasn't bothered about that. The graphics are stunning, the combat is really enjoyable (as I was worried about how they were going to tackle the turn based style combat of the original) - there are certain parts of the story that differ from the midgar section of the original game, but I think this is because the developers needed to make it into a complete came and not just leave you hanging. It was really beautiful and nostalgic, and it gives all the characters new depths (I even cried at one point when Barrett speaks)... but I'd also say there was enough explanation and ~mystery~ for a first time player of the story to enjoy. All in all, I'm glad we had to wait for so long to get this. Compared to the initial demo/teaser we got for the PS3 many moons ago... this is God tier.

Final fantasy 7: Reimagined
First, if you've played the original FF7, this is a genuinely interesting reimagining of that game and story - very familiar, but changed significantly enough that it's a truly fresh game. Favourite threads are still there (I'm not going to spoil it but the cores of things like the pillar mission, airbuster fight, wall market shenanigans are all still there, just brilliantly tweaked) and the heart of the original beats strongly - but more than half of the gameplay is completely new, adding depth to the original in ways I'd never have expected. Underplayed background themes in the original (e.g. the cloaked figures) are much better sold in this version, quick "levels" like the train graveyard are now huge and include a sub plot - and even new (npc) characters are so well done they feel like part of the original family as well as fleshing out the original npcs AND main characters massively. All this, and the knowledge this is only "part 1", so I can only imagine how much extra new stuff there's going to be in the full series means simply calling it a remake is massively under selling what they've done. And if you're new to ff7 - it doesn't matter; if you're familiar with more recent final fantasy games it's similar in style and play to those, but an excellent stand alone: and if you're completely new to FF, this is still a brilliant action game to enjoy, with an excellent story driven plot. Gameplay is simple to pick up and learn, with complex game management that's cleverly built to actually feel easy to get to grips with - materia and weapon systems are fantastic and flexible, letting you feel both in control and able to personalise your gameplay. Voice acting, main character graphics and motion are all lovely - and the backdrops are stunning. However (Of course there's a however) There are more than a few things that I've found insanely irritating - possibly because everything else is so good: A lot of the original game was dialogue boxes. Unfortunately, a lot of this game has replaced those with tedious conversation, where more than a few lengthy chats are composed purely of two or more characters going (literally) "ah.... ummm.....oh!.... ugh....huh....". Most you can speed up by pressing O, but a lot you just have to sit through while cloud mutters and Aerith gasps. You can skip some of these chats and cut scenes entirely, but then end up missing some important cinematic bridges or context conversations that are buried in these one syllable exchanges. There's also this ridiculous new thing they've thrown in roughly every 20 minutes of play where you have to side shuffle down an alleyway, crouch-walk through tunnels or otherwise just sloooooowly totter behind a companion for a few meters. Not as a stealth device, or part of any tension building - just a really weird pointless activity that's been thrown in for seemingly no reason, and actually just slows down the piece to a grinding halt. Side quests vary from good to UNBELIEVABLY dumb (one of them has you tracking back and forth around a town to look at 3 cats who just walk off... sure, why not), but to be fair, some of them are actually designed with a purpose - either to teach you an essential gameplay aspect, or help you get your bearings in an area. It's just weirdly mismatched. There's also the original game's mini puzzles (remember the thrill of the "hit the buttons at the same time" thing in the reactor?) - some are better this time, but some have been added, which fine, but not always easy to get right either because you need a trial run really (the pump valves in the sewers had me swearing so much I think I shocked my cat), or because the character movement on screen actually blocks what you're trying to watch cues for. The bit I'm still not sure if I love or hate though is the fighting; which there's a LOT of. The turn based system is dead, which I have to say I'm really disappointed with given that teasers since the announcement have suggested you can choose to have the turn based "classic" style. Spoiler alert - nope, you can't: instead if you choose "classic", you are gifted this chaotic, smash-fest of a battle technique, that has a nod to action selecting, however it's nearly impossible to be strategic because as you're planning a set up, your party is doing their own thing - so please enjoy the tooth grinding delight of setting up to steal a coveted item or meet a Battle Intel task, to have your pal Tifa take out the fiend you were carefully picking bits of HP off to keep alive. Also the fact you can't use magic or items until your parties action bars are full is utterly ridiculous. However, the chaos of it does make it weirdly appealing- its fast paced and visually brilliant, there is a degree of control you can have if you're nimble with your controller or willing to pay enough attention - problem is while you're attempting a turn based effect, the things you're fighting are just popping off all over the shop - so it's actually just easier to go with the hack and slash/ turn-based-lite style. However however, these pain points, while seriously painful, don't overshadow what is otherwise a wonderful gaming experience overall. For the original FF7 fans, it's a magnificent combination of playing an old favourite and playing a completely new game - for those without the experience of the old game, it's just a great, great PS4 game. Either way, I can't recommend it enough (even with the duff bits!). It might therefore seem harsh to give it 4 stars (I'd give it 4.5 if I could) - but the fact it COULD be perfect without the annoying bits mean I can't give it a full 5.

Worth the wait for Final Fantasy fans
Have just started the "Budding Bodyguard" episode (#8) and being 13 hours into play, I have to say I am loving this expanded version of FFVII. From the graphics to the characters, the detail is amazing. I still find myself standing on a platform in the reactor and looking up at the plant or down at the slums and thinking "wow". The battle system is interesting and I'm really enjoying it. Unlike some other reviewers, I've eased into it well and find I'm using all the characters far more than I did in the original game. The expansion of the levels is great and I was pleased to see my favourite bad boy - Sephiroth - made a very early, albeit fleeting, appearance. The battles are the tactical type you would expect - use the correct materia elements, utilise the abilities of your party at different points to exploit the weaknesses of the enemy. Focus on what is being said or suggested by your friends. They aren't shouting random stuff for no reason in mid battle! I loved the original Final Fantasy VII and spent over 120 hours playing it, achieving every element I could, including all the hidden bosses. This is proving to be as much fun so far. My only minor niggle at this early stage is that I enjoy levelling up - something you need to do in these games to really stand a chance later on. So far, there have been almost no areas to do this other than the Scrapyard in the slums. I hope to find some good places to battle away later on though and get those stats up.

Average at best
I've waited until I got the platinum trophy for it before leaving my review, and I've platinumed every final fantasy game with the exception of 14 which I really like but play on pc. I also have been playing final fantasy games for a long time, I've completed all main line games 1 through to 15. Just a big rpg lover ๐ Also too many reviews are based on a few hours of game play which is crazy, finish the game first and then give your thoughts!! I enjoyed the first few hours alot myself but it goes down hill! Review games in full not a small %! Rant over. Ok so 3 stars I feel is a fair review and I hate being super negative to games as I'd hate to be a game dev (must be horrible to see negative things about things you create.) I feel the game is actually a good reflection on the original, (few hours) the characters are really well designed and represented really well. Also the game is clearly a beauty to look at which is no surprise with who's making it! I also for the most part enjoyed the sound track as it's great to hear old classics in a new way. Sadly that's all the positives out of the way, the game feels like a padded out demo.. the addition of really boring side quests to add more game time, (game its self isnt long enough by far.) And how can so many chapters be that dull? Are we expected to buy more than 5 or 6 games just to finish the game? Who knows how many games it will end up at. Boss fights start off really wow! But they all follow similar patterns in that they have phases and it can be frustrating to stagger a boss for it then to switch to its next phase and the stagger bar is reset. I have no major problems with the combat it's fine similar to kingdom hearts combat style but it feels more fun on KH. Also slight spoiler but glitch alert.. when in the vents on chapter 16 I looked down one of the optional vents for it to not let me out of viewing the vent.. a game breaking glitch! I googled it and I wasnt alone and my friend also reported the same issue. I only want my opinion to be heard as I LOVE the series and it makes me so sad there hasn't been an amazing final fantasy for so long now! I have all but given up hope for an epic final fantasy again. So yeah the game just isnt fun for most parts there are some fun chapters and the scenes look amazing but there is just far too much padding and boring stuff throughout. An average game.
