How does the 7.1 zoom compare to the old slr cameras? my old nixon had a 75 and a zoom lens

The zoom lens works very well. It is equivalate to a 28 to 200 mm lens on a 35 mm camera. Because the size of the sensor is small, there is much more depth of field that you would have with the equivalent focal length on a 35 mm camera. At high ISO there is some noise but that can be removed with software if you are forced to use high ISO. I keep mine set on 200 and don't have an issue. I would recommend having an extra battery. I would recommend using the RAW format, and Photoshop Elements to process the images. Nikon has a free App that displays thumbnails of RAW files on Windows computers. All and all a good camera.

what is the size of the memory card

whatever size you buy I don't believe it comes with one and if it does it will say on the side of the card. My recommendation is to get and 8 or 16G card as if you shoot in raw mode for best results the files are big and you will need memory

Yes. That said, you have multiple LCD panal choices...1) black screen that comes alive after you've taken the shot...only live for a few seconds2) always on with no extra data...just the picture last taken3) always on with specific data, a few different options, and the last picture takenI just did this to make sure of my answer.
