This brand has always been the gold standard in baking in my family. I love poppy seed and have tried nearly every brand available plus I make my own poppy seed filling from scratch. I was sure that a favorite brand and favorite food could be a great match, but I was wrong. The filling is dense and nearly tasteless, except for a bitter flavor. It was also far too expensive for the little pouch. The Polish and East European brands are too mushy and artificially sweet and have more orange than poppy flavor. The best is still Solo brand, but it uses high fructose corn syrup.I intended this filling for a special strudel, opened the pouch to try it and the pouch has remained untouched in the fridge for weeks. I would throw it if it hadn't cost so much, so will probably end up blending it with something that gives it flavor and makes it spreadable enough to be used as a filling on a strudel dough.

I'm a poppy seed snob. If it's not like Busia's, it's no good. I opened it as well as a canned poppy seed. The color was much darker, and there are no added fillers like raisins or nuts, so one can add whatever they would like for their recipe. I don't really remember what is added to the ground seeds, but my grandmother used to hand grind hers, and these tasted less like canned. I wish it came in a bigger tub for poppy seed rolls.
