Black & Decker 5140112-17 Switch Kit

The good is that after an ordeal, it will work.The bad is:It wires completely different than the old models, so you need to have a clue.It requires eliminating the cord strain relief.The instructions aren't the best.The cost IS high for a piece of plastic.Were it not for the fact that my old switch had failed, and after opening up the enclosure to find a lot of the mount pieces broken, I would have simply replaced only the switch. But again, the new style switches do wire differently.That's MY take.

What I ordered

Wiring is a tad different, but the instructions helped. Good part. The actual switch inside is different and better than the old switch.

The replacement of the 20 year old handle and switch was straight forward. The handle and switch are a bit smaller than the original but the fit of the handle connections were the same. Hopefully it will hold nearly as well as the original handle.Not sure why some folks had problems with the electrical connections. Have to replace the screw on connectors with the supplied clips but for most it shouldn't be an issues. The connection diagram clearly shows the proper wire connections.The new handle only comes with four new screws for the handle and one for the switch. You must save the machine threaded screws for the handle connection to the motor.Because the power cord opening is much smaller at the rear of the handle the cord holder can't be used. Also the inside of the handle is a bit different so the clip to hold the cord inside the handle can't be used. Wasn't too happy about that but once all screwed together the cord is tight coming out of the handle.This was the best replacement I could find and was certainly the best price and shipping.

08/29/17 replaced broken handle with 5140112-17 handle & switch kit. Simple enough when you understand the new switch is totally different than the original. Old switch field and brake were switched on the long switch axis. new switch has active switches wired at each end not the long side of switch. Do not try to use the original cord, hold down clamp as the handle will not seat together, a different holding system is used and built into the handle. A whole set of new screws are not in the kit -NOTE- SAVE the old screws and make a screw/location drawing as some are machine threads, these go thru BOTH handle halves and are the handle anchors to the saw. After routing the new wires into bottom handle half try to save some of the extra wire length by tucking it into the wire routing channels before crimping the new connectors to the wires. Remember the new switch has contacts at each end and not long ways. Be very careful routing wires at the left end of switch so they do not rub the switch when trigger is activated. New handle is smaller than original. Use EXTRA care routing wires. Check the brushes as they (OR the switch OR the cord) could be the problem you bought the handle/switch kit for. All in all this kit saves the saw from the junk pile and well worth the effort to save it.

It works. Parts are good fit. Maybe not quite as sturdy as the original handle but, close. Not a 5-minute install, however. Don't plan to do it while on the jobsite.Keep old handle screws. You will need some. Particularly the threaded screws that go into the metal motor housing. The star-headed screws (both original and kit screws) are an unnecessary pain.Recommend not bother installing the new carrying handle. It will break, again. As others have observed, the Dewalt design of the handle for this saw is poor.Only 4 wires. Can't make a mistake wiring. However, removing the old wire connectors and installing the new connectors that come with the kit, is tedious.

The directions are hard to follow. No step by step. Just a picture with two paragraphs.Confused with the four screws that come with. Four stars due to the instructions...None the less all said and done it works. Now to see how long.
