How far apart are the two screw holes on each bracket? Are they close enough that each could be drilled into a single stud?

The screw holes are @ 1 1/4" so you have to angle the pre-drill prior to anchoring the brackets. I have used them already and had great success. Use a carpenters square to make sure off the wall correctly as you tighten up each side equally. Also a bullet level to be reassured that you are up just a tad for the weight once the shelving is in place.

How thick is the backplate?

The back plate is 3/16" thick, they're strong enough to support the shelves, will become invisible after installed.

Will this work for a fireplace mantel?

Dear customer, as long as you could fine place to mount the shelf brackets on wall and the weight capacity is within 75lbs 2 brackets. Then it will work.

Do you have longer supports,shelf is 16 inches
