Leonardo DiCaprio is electrifying in this adrenaline-drenched, tantalisingly seductive thriller from the director of Trainspotting. Richard (DiCaprio) a young American backpacker, is willing to risk his life for just one thing: that mind-blowing rush you can only get from braving the ultimate adventure. But on a secret, deceptively perfect beach, he’ll soon discover that, as the level of intensity rises and the stakes climb higher, desire grows stronger... and danger grows deeper. Co-starring Virginie Ledoyen, this "journey to the unexpected, full of surprises, twists and turns, love and romance, lust and desire" (Maria Sallas, GEMS) explores the hidden perils and dark places that lurk just beyond the shores of paradise...

Seminal
Remember that feeling you had when you were 18? That there was a fascinating, foreign, distant and yet accessible world out there? Well, this is that...admittedly, this is that twenty years ago...it might as well still be true though. It loses a little of the perspective of the book, but it's no bad thing...it captures the theme excellently. Watch it: it'll keep you awake and watching the dawn even though you have work the next morning. Daffy was right.

Doesn’t do the book justice!
What a flop! Watched this after reading the fantastic book and after visiting Thailand.Remote community..? More like holiday camp. The suspense, drama and madness didn’t come through at all - the cast were all clean shaven and look like they’re out of an H&M summer collection ad! Definitely not a pulp classic.

Insightful study about trust fund brats
Confirmed: Hippie trust fund brats = Hitler Youth. It fleshes out the fascist nature of middle class left-wing hippies (l'm left wing too). However, l didn't give a higher rating because l feel the filmmaker was genuinely part of that lifestyle. The film showed no irony that the characters were actual colonists in denial.

The best film ever!
This is my absolute favourite film of all time.I watch it at least 2 or 3 times a year! It's a masterpiece. If you've never seen it, its certainly a film you can get totally emersed in with lots of twists and moments that will shock you and make you look at some of the things that could go very wrong in "paradise".Leo is perfect as the ballsy loner American teen, Richard and Tilda Swinton as English camp leader Sal is both beautiful and controlling. Interestingly, in the book (which I recommend even more highly than the film) the character of Richard was a Brit and Sal was an American so they changed that right up...I'm wondering if that's because Leo couldnt do the English accent??!All in all, a worthy watch indeed. 5 out of 5 stars from me. Ps...also a thumping 90's indy dance soundtrack...bonus!

At times startling, and at times hard to grab.
A pretty weird film, and an escape into fantasy and weirdness. Well done though and worth a watch.
