Posing Techniques for Photographing Model Portfolios

Pay attention to detail and get great shots !
The entry-level is not beginners for this one. Can't be, to shoot a professional portfolio you must have a handsome bit of knowledge already. Having that, this books has still more to offer ! Billy Pegram leads you on the way to gradually improve you pictures. There is very much attention to details that are easily overlooked otherwise, like hands and feet positioning, or where to crop and why. It shows you the possibilities for shooting a portfolio that contains commercial, fashion, editorial etc. pictures, and what sets them apart. With a host of examples, Billy shows that apparently small changes can make quite a difference. It covers more than shooting for portfolio's, for this is info that you can use time and time again for all kinds of photographic activities that have to do with portraying people or making a statement using a model. Being a professional photographer I can only say: everyone can learn something here. Lots of images are a joy to see !

Solid information for veteran and newbie
I think posing techniques is a 3 star read but because the few tips i did pick up were so valuable i escalated it to a 4 star. the section on hand placement was very helpful. photos were for the most part very good. a few looked outdated because of the swimwear but they still demonstrated the information perfectly. I'm a sports shooter and needed a little brush up on some people posing and this was a good refresher for me. The building portfolio stuff wasnt what i was looking for but it was useful information anyway. This was only the 2nd photo book that has not let me down. I have stacks of books that are in the garage but this one will stay in my office.

Great book!!
I found this book and got it used off Amazon as I'm a photographer student at lacc. Posing I have trouble with the most. They dont teach this in the program. While the book is mostly women the text Is so good it could be a class. The teachers at the school are really good but don't teach you about working with clients or models. This book gives a lot of great info just in the introduction.

Superb.
After reading each page or section of a page I analyze "every aspect" and small detail each pose thoroughly. This takes much more time than just reading the text but is well worth it. Book covers everything you need to know and is well organized into smaller units within a specific pose situation. I was however disappointed with the choice of using silhouette shots for the C.S. and I poses as I still am uncertain about how they are to be interpreted. this was a bad choice considering most the other poses are dependent on these three poses. Other than tat I love this book - absolutely and would never choose anything else over it as the basis for my model photography.

Don't buy the Kindle edition!!
There's some good info in this book, but the formatting for the Kindle app on the iPad turns it into an unusable mess. It's a photography book: there are illustrative photos, with captions. But somehow they don't line up right, and you'll find yourself going back and forth trying to figure out which photo matches which explanation. I'm now buying the paperback version, which is considerably more expensive, so I have to admit I got a lot out of the parts of the book I've read. But don't buy the Kindle edition unless you enjoy frustration.

Useful and well-written
This book was a great help to me. Systematically explained, well-structured, with an excellent and versatile collection of model photos. The only problem is, that the photos are (usually) not direct illustrations of the text. They are, of course, in strong relations with the main text, examples of the outlined rules and instructions, and they have their own, well-written captions. However, sometimes it is a bit hard to understand what the author means; sometimes some re-reading is definitely required.Still a great book, however.

Great book for models
I am just learning how to model and I bought three different books off Amazon to help me learn how to pose. This, by far, was the best. It describes what works and what doesn't with posing and gives clear pictures that explain the descriptions. It also gives suggests on how to practice and understand poses you see in magazines. Great for a inexperienced model!!

Good, but experience beats any book
If by reading this book, you think you'll be able to shoot any model, then I'm afraid you're going to be stuck on the same point as I was. Let me explain:Yes, this book teaches you to avoid certain poses and how (or where) to put hands and feet properly; and indeed, I've paid attention how the models' hands and feet are positioned when shooting (eg. how to correctly put hands in your pocket); so there the book has archieved what I wanted. The problem is, what after that first pose? I learned the most by shooting alongside a seasoned photographer at a wedding and at a modelshoot (thank you Jef Janssens). He showed me that by striking just one pose, you're able to shoot several pictures just by moving the models' head or arms. Amazing! So if you think you can direct a model to pose properly and want the picture to be entirely correct, this book is recommended.

As it says (almost?)
This book covers the posing of each individual part of the body. It also points out the differences in posing for different genres e.g. the positioning of hands for product work as opposed to fashion. More importantly it points out and graphically demonstrates the ways not to do it.The book took me a few hours to read, due to the fact there are lots of pictures and the text is short and to the point. I would suggest I will need to go back over it to fully absorb the points. Why 'almost' in the review title? As pointed out in other reviews, there is very little if no useful hints to working with male models. The writer seems to assume that all models are female. This makes it quite awkward if you are literally just starting out and the only person you have to help you is a male mate. Point to note - it is not the wearing of high heels or the blonde wig, it is the chest waxing that has put him off! Guess I need to find another book for posing males. To sum up - worth the money? I think so.

which is nice for inspiration
The book has some poses in, which is nice for inspiration. However, lots of the poses are on the .... less 'elegant' side of modeling, and not really what I had in mind. Still, the book was inexpensive and it's nice to have around. "Where should I put my hands."The book also has NO diversity at all. All of the models featured are young, pretty, slim, white women. No black women, no men, no one older than maybe 27. Surely, a book which is meant to suggest poses for portfolios would cover the poses appropriate to a variety of people who model?

Great posing guide
This is more like it when it comes to books on posing, plus good descriptive text on getting the best out of a pose. Only one thing etra would have been better and that is lighting setup examples for the finished shots so reader could replicate the effect! Nice to see higher res photos as well so you can zoom up to check out results, all books need hi-res images.
