Gerritsen (1948-2008) started designing the Dutch Priona gardens in 1978. He is internationally well-known as the writer of the first Piet Oudolf books and as a designer of gardens in several countries. One of his best known projects was a complete renovation of the organic gardens at Waltham Place, near London. 'Essay on Gardening' however is not a game between well-matched opponents. Nature is much more powerful than man. Thinking ahead is not sufficient; nature is an unpredictable opponent, who may come forward with moves that no man could have foreseen. With a foreword by Piet Oudolf. Review: Brilliant Read ! - Excellent, intelligently written book Review: Five Stars - One of the best gardening books ever

Insightful vision into new perspective on planting
I do agree with other review that it is silly to put the photos in black and white, especially for prairies; any details in the photos is totally lost in monochrome. However, it is not a picture book but an excellent garden designer's perception of the world of gardening. With tales of plant hunting, personal experience with plants and an insight into a wilder more tolerant way of gardening wherein nature is accepted as an intrinsic part of a human's perspective of aesthetic. Great reading.

such a shame
This is a wonderfull book, it was a real labour of love. The "essay" is in fact an extended love letter to plants and wildlife, written by one who knows. The text is masterly. It is such a shame that this second edition (2010), published after the death of its author contains so many black and white photos. The first edition (2008) was entirely in colour, with many of the photos taken by Henk Gerritsen, many in close-up. A gardening book in grey-scale seems like a wasted opportunity!

What a beautiful book !
Stunning insights, observations, reflections and inspirations on gardening, biology, nature . Questioning the all too perfectly designed gardens and instead proposing a genuine approach. Although the book contains stunning photos, it definitely isn't a coffeetable book, but a real impulse for a (re-)new(-ed) relation between humans and gardens. Highly recommended.
