Is not a direct replacement
So as many people have discovered this is not a direct bolt in fix. The cable ends up being to taught to run through the pulleys on the existing window track. After reading many post on this item and similar ones(noting that this is for a convertible and varies from the standard hard top which soon ordering another repair kit found absolutely will not work. But a new window regulator is anywhere from $500-$700 which is ridiculous for a $2500 car!! So determined to make it work I gambled and times to what amounted to about an 1 1/4” from the cable housing at one end only( the end that is at the top of the window guide on the hinge side of the door if I recall correctly... but don’t hold me to it🤔) this is a precise alteration because only the housing can be cut and care must be excercised to make sure the cable is not cut. Some say there’s a special tool or a method of stretching the cable but I can say in my 24 years as a mechanic never have I seen a cable that tight and I’d say forcing this cable over the pulleys( which are plastic) would result in broken pulleys. This was about a 15 minute fix that I performed with a cut of wheel, dikes and a flat tip screw driver for prying apart housing. In the end the window repair was a success and he customer was happy that they didn’t have to pay $500 or more dollars. I’d give this item higher than ⭐️⭐️⭐️ If it were a direct install with out modifications. But like I said worth the difference in price!!!

How to easily install cables.
I was hesitant after reading installation reviews, but for the price thought I would give it a try. After seeing the issues of getting cable over the pulleys while attached I made my own spanner wrench to turn the plastic pulley. After getting it together and trying to install in door I realized I put the cables on backwards to the regulator arms. So I got to do it again. The diy tool made it a non event. See pict of how I did it. I hope the cables last but for less than 1/4 of the price of a new regulator I guess I can do it a couple of times.PS I did not remove any of the zip ties until it was installed to the regulator rails. If the pin falls out that the zip tie is holding it takes some patience to get the spring/ratchet back compressed and pin reinstalled.

Read the reviews for tool making tips
After four hours of pulling on the steel cable I became emotional. I was yelling at it and kicking anything within reach. So I went inside regrouped, calmed down and looked for my man card. After reading the reviews I read where someone had made a tool and used a clamp. This made all the difference I went back to my work bench and in 15 minutes had it together. Works great on my 2004 convertible beetle.

Saved a ton of money by DIY
Fit perfectly, almost gave 4 stars on install only because any replacement would have been painful, not sellers fault :) Don’t clip the ties off of the sprocket or pull the pin on the spring until it’s in place, my socket popped and I had to manually rewind the spool. I am NOT a mechanic, but was able to complete the replacement on my 2005 VW convertible without major issues, and there are plenty of YouTube videos for the “how”.

COULD NOT GIVE ZERO STARS
This item was advertised for a convertible but after finding that it did not fit, took part to VW to find it was for a hard top..let me explain..the windows for a convert roll all the way up to the top but the hard top windows only roll up to the top of the door frame, this is appox 2 inches less window travel.....and to my surprise, the cabling is approx. 2 inches less : ( and this was confirmed at the dealership, but being the Mcguyver my wife says I am, I painfully shortened the cable casing by approx. 2 inches and now it works, if I was sent the correct repair kit, this would have been a 1 - 2 hour job but instead it took about 6 hours....WILL NOT USE THIS COMPANY AGAIN!!!!!

This is the right part. Stop asking.
This is exactly the thing to buy if you want to repair your pre-2010 convertible New Beetle windows. It fit perfect in my '03 Beetle Convertible GLSThis repair is NOT EASY TO DO. Look at the YouTube videos and you'll see how it's done. You will have to pull the wire until your fingers almost bleed. You may scrape your knuckles trying to get the last little bit snapped in. You'll use vicegrips and your legs and arms to puuuuuull the wire so it fits. And it won't fit at first. And then you'll give up. But you already bought the part so you decide to try one more time. And then it will work. You may doubt whether this is the right part, or you may think your window is different from the others. But this is the right part.

!DO NOT BUY THIS PART!
THIS IS NOT THE CORRECT REGULATOR FOR A CONVERTIBLE/CABRIOLET! THE CABLE IS APPROX 1" TOO SHORT. IF YOU CHOOSE TO BUY AND MODIFY THE WINDOW WILL SIT CROOKED UNLESS YOU MANAGE TO SHORTEN THE CABLE HOUSING ON EACH SIDE BY EXACTLY THE SAME AMOUNT. THIS MODIFICATION IS DIFFICULT AND TIME CONSUMING.THIS WAS CONFIRMED TO ME BY MY LOCAL DEALER VW PARTS DEPARTMENT, WHERE THEY SAID THAT WHEN THEY DO THE REPAIR THEY MUST INSTALL AN ENTIRELY NEW REGULATOR AND TRACKS PN;0222TOP 17\Y0-837-461-F BECAUSE THEY CANNOT PURCHASE A REPAIR KIT THAT WORKS. PRICE FOR THIS PART IS $344.93. THIS REPRESENTS A SAVINGS OVER THE DEALER'S QUOTED REPAIR PRICE OF $828.GO FOREWARNED!

Something's not right with the tolerances on this part
The cables were about 1 cm too short. I had to carefully dremel away 0.5 cm of cable sheathing in two places to get this part to fit. I cannot imagine any sort of tool that could compress the sheathing, or stretch the cable a full centimeter to make this part fit. Yes, I had the pre-loaded springs completely compressed with tie wraps.
