The Men Who Stare At Goats [Blu-ray]

Huh?
I know this movie was supposed to be funny, perhaps satirical, but to me it was just stupid. Perhaps, with all those left leaning men in the lead roles they were just taking cheap shots at the Army, the CIA, etc.

bad
What a waste of an hour and a half. I kept waiting for it to get better but it never did. Proof that even big stars can't be entertaining all the time. A steaming pile of waste.

Another Hollywood propaganda Movie!
It was a funny movie but please go see who supports Hollywood, these types of movies, and the Democratic Party. GEORGE SOROS! Look him up in depth. HE HAS MADE HIS FORTUNE ON DESTROYING ECONOMY OF WESTERN COUNTRIES. It was interesting that now that we are getting close to the elections in the US, all of a sudden this 2009 movie that belittles USA and our armed forces, POPS UP AS my FIRST CHOICE on AMAZON! Also, Jeff BEZOS, SOROS, AND CHINA ARE VERY FRIENDLY! THEIR AGENT? YES, THE DEMOCRATIC POLITICIANS. THIS IS AN EDUCATIONAL MOVIE FOR ALL THE DEMOCRATS TO LOOK DEEP AND SEE WHO OR WHICH POWERS ARE TRYING TO RUN OUR COUNTRY, THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Crazy story of how US army tried to create a unit of psychics Sounds ridiculous and it was
Men Who Stare At Goats was a quirky comedy based off of a book of the same name that looked at the U.S. military’s attempt to weaponize psychic powers. It featured Ewan McGregor as investigative reporter Bob Wilton who discovers George Clooney was Lyn Cassady who was the lead psychic in the army’s program, Jeff Bridges was Bill Django the army officer who wrote a manual on how to use psychic powers and organized a unit. That was backed by Stephen Lang as General Hopgood who was convinced the Soviets were doing psychic research so America had to respond. Finally, there’s Kevin Spacey as Sergeant Larry Hooper who joined Django’s unit and acted like a jerk to everyone and destroyed their comradery. As Cassady told Wilton he worked in Project Jedhi and the goal was to create super soldiers each with their own superpower. The whole thing was based upon Django researching the hippie movement and drugs in the 1970s. Afterward he came up with the New Earth Army. This movie explains their activities and aftermath up to the Iraq war.The story is crazy because it’s basically based upon a soldier, Django, who became a hippie. It’s nuts that he would be able to get the military to back his ideas. I guess during the Cold War if the U.S. thought the Soviets were doing something crazy the Americans would follow in kind. There’s plenty of comedy as well. Seeing Django talking about bringing flowers and indigenous music to people and the “sparkling eyes technique” to spread peace was hilarious. If this all sounds ridiculous that’s the point. It’s meant to be absurd, and that’s proven to be even more so as some of this really happened. This all adds up to a highly entertaining and crazy movie.C

I Honestly Tried Hard To Join In The "Fun", But It Was Just Too Frig'n Lame.
I Honestly Tried Hard To Join In The "Fun", But It Was Just Too Frig'n Lame. - 25 minutes in and your still wondering, when in the crap will it at least bring me to a chuckle? - If you're easily entertained and all you need is a star studded cast that acts simple, then I suppose this is your movie. Just like any man who appreciates an occasional shallow humor movie, I held my expectations low, but yet the genuine humor never materialized. It not only didn't have the quick laughs peppered throughout the movie, it failed to ever build to anything cleverly humorous. - How this movie ever got above 3 stars certainly reflects poorly on the general American public's overall view of what is truly funny..

To every halfway decent story, a kernel of truth
Sure, this movie and the hackneyed arch-leftist journalism it is based on are pointlessly derogatory to the military, and full of weak tropes designed to make viewers feel better about fringe Marxist political pundits, and more sympathetic to terrorism. But it contains a kernel of reality, showcasing the damage done to Western civilization as the US government has forsaken proper military training in favor of loopy social justice agendas. And, surely as a mere coincidence, it rips off some of the philosophy and core plot mechanics of Gordon R. Dickson's Childe Cycle books (in particular Tactics of Mistake and Necromancer), which are on the whole a vastly superior example of military science fiction. For those who want to see this story done right, read the original Dorsai! trilogy. As a side note, Clooney and Stephen Root are, as always, stellar actors deserving of all available praise for their talent here.

If you've ever in the Army then you'll get this movie...otherwise it is a pretty good story
A really good story with some twists and turns you may not see coming. Definitely worth watching. And the SF (Special Forces) goat lab is a real thing I know cause I went through 91D (OR Tech) school at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio I was lucky enough to meet some of the SF troops and found out they had to go through very rigorous medical training they learn in 9 months what a civilian PA (Physicians Assistant) learns in 4 years...the goat lab was the final test they had to pass for their medical training...

Great darkish comedy with a great cast!
This has been a a great movie for entertainment the few times we've watched it. You can't really go wrong with a slightly goofy comedy with Clooney. This movie is based on true events, and from what we've been able to find has a pretty entertaining history when it comes to the truth when we've done research about it.A top-secret wing of the military is run by Jeff Bridges. He was paid for a couple decades to go around the country and research truth, love, finding peace, and searching for inner powers. When he returns, he is given a company of men to train in the powers of the mind. The whole story revolves around a reporter (McGregor) who is following Clooney around to try and get this story from him about his past and ends up going to meet this man who led this revolution in mind control and powers. Along the way, you get the back story and get to see some of the history behind it all. This movie has many people in it including George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Jeff Bridges, and Kevin Spacey. It is well worth the price to rent, and is a pretty good movie to buy as well, which, we will eventually do, because I get tired of having to rent it, ha ha. It's a great movie. I would definitely give it a chance if you're looking for something a bit different.

Hilarious and wonderful film
This is one of the funniest films I've ever seen. It's heart well and truly in the right place, Ewan takes us on this gloriously daft adventure into the more 'interesting' elements of American military history. Both Jeff Bridges and George Clooney give epic performances. There is so much to love about this film, I don't know where to begin. Often original and laugh out loud funny, it actually to some extend reminded me of the military school I went to plus all the drugs.Just one point of nerdism from me: The all seeing eye is not 'the symbol of the Jedi'. PMSL.Wonderful film, and gives me faith in mankind.

Very good to get this!
Came last Saturday. Got this on recommendation from my brother-in law! It is based a an amazing true-life story, and the action of Ewan MacGregor and George Clooney, make this one of the most watchable DVD's! The meaning of the title is explained on the back of the DVD. Ewan MacGregor plays a wet-behind the ears reporter, who joins a man called Cassady (George Clooney), who goes off with the reporter (Bob) to search when the main founder goes missing! Plays very well on my DVD Player, and subtitles are very welcome!

Great fun, worth every minute
The Men Who Stare at Goats is a seriously under-rated film with mental chuckles almost every second of the way. Those looking for banal belly laughs should probably avoid this flick, but anyone with a relative or friend who was (or still is) affected by flower-power, or who has served in any of the armed forces is in for a good time from the second scene on. (The first scene helps set up the second scene, so don't worry. You'll catch on pretty quickly). If you have never experienced military discipline, just use a parallel path: was school routine full of serious nutters in charge and your class mates included some odd-balls, weirdos and eccentrics who provided light relief? If so, this celluloid on a DVD will suit you too.The Men Who Stare at Goats has a cast list that provokes the question: why? The answer: they must have been lining up to take part in this cerebral adventure-cum-comedy. The plot involves a time warp that brings together Hippy-dom and Psy-Ops to fight a war that is definitely current. The mix brings humour to the Iraq-Afghanistan conflict the way M*A*S*H brought chuckles to the Korean (and even Vietnam) experiences. The movie provokes thought too. Politically "correct" behaviour is put under the microscope. How do we view conflict and conflict resolution are subjects that come under scrutiny, so the audience will have something to ponder for quite a while. But that is not the point: this flick is for fun.Yes, it works. But it helps if the viewer is aware of his/her "other" side... if this explanation is beyond you, there's a good chance the film will be as well. (Fans of Mr Bean might prefer a different product).

The Men Who Stare at Goats
A pleasantly amusing film to whiter away an evening. A smart little script with a lot of good laughs and an excellent cast. Its a bit of a film that seems to have passed most people by and in fairness its more of a rental/purchase movie that probably comes across better than it would in a cinema.Switching between the training of hippie commando's in the 80's and a current mission in Iraq the film passes nicely and brings you into the characters story. Clooney is fantastic as the paranoid psychic Lyn Cassady equally matched by McGregor's earnest reporter Bob Wilton. Bridges and Spacey who play the hippie commander and snake in the grass bad apple get less screen time but make their presence felt. All in all nice little film and recommended.

Special features are high definition the main film isn't despite being a Blue Ray disc.
The film is great but it is not in high definition despite it being on a Blue Ray disc it is only 576p. The packaging says it should be 1080i but it isn't. Oddly the special features are in 1080i. Now given it only cost £3.62 for a Blue Ray disc it is hard to complain too much but I think the product description on Amazon should be more honest.
