it completely depends on what you are using up front. in my case I use a tripod. I need all the height I can get on the back. if you use sand bags or something lower than a tripod go with something lower.

will this work with a lever action 22?

Yes, I shoot a CZ 452 Ultra Lux and it shoots fine, very nice bag

can this bag be used for pisttols

I suppose you can use it for pistol rest but I don't believe it would be as good as it is for rifle rest. You would have to build a platform to put the rest on to get it high enough to use it. I had to make a platform to use it with my rifle.
