Great for students!
This has been a great book for my students (especially my ELL students and struggling readers) to help them better understand the reason children and others come to America.

It is a good book to use when trying to help students understand or see the human/individual side of the current immigration debate.

Wonderful and empowering
This is a wonderful book that empowers the voices of our immigrant students in the US. Students are able to tell their stories and share a message of hope, even in the most challenging situations. It is a great book for an Immigration unit. Powerful.

Very valuable teaching tool
I used this for my ELD class this summer, and my middle school students really reacted and related to it. The graphic novel format makes it accessible, and that it's side-by-side bilingual is a great way to honor both cultures. Being that the stories are autobiographical, there are a lot of vulnerabilities exposed, so if you use this in your classroom, take the time to process and discuss the difficulties that each author has faced. Follow it up with something fun/lighthearted for your kiddos.
