Starwest Botanicals Asafoetida Powder, 1 Pound

By far the best asafoetida powder I've used.I've used the crystal type which is more medicinal strength..I've used the others with wheat or rice as fillers.Starwest Botanicals one doesn't have that overpowering flavor and smell that most have. The fenugreek powder is definitely a plus too!

I like knowing this brand of Asafoetida has no gluten in the filler.

We ordered because it was supposed to be cut with fennel instead of the usual wheat. Not the case, it has wheat. Bummer. Can’t return it either.

Asafoetida is a plant resin, and in its pure form is sold as a rock-like substance. Pre-powdered asafoetida is much easier to use, but in order for it to maintain its powdered form, it must be combined with another ingredient. All other brands of powdered asafoetida I have found are combined with rice flour or wheat flour. This asafoetida is combined with fenugreek powder. I like that because it means the asafoetida is gluten-free and grain free. It is also delicious! Fenugreek has a milder flavor than asafoetida, so it does not drown out the asafoetida flavor in my cooking. It seems to perfectly complement the asafoetida flavor, actually, and I have had many compliments on dishes I have cooked using this combination. I highly recommend it.

the description says that the herb powder is mixed with fenugreek. I found this combination appealing. But the product I received is instead mixed with " rice flour and gum arabic, and turmeric root." thus, the description is misleading or they sent me the wrong product. It is not worth returning, but I will not order this item again.

This is only 40% asafoetida; the other 60% is fenugreek. As of the time that I write this, this is not written anywhere in the product description. Smells worse than the one I buy from Savory Spice Shop, and tastes much worse. I would return it, but it's very difficult to package up a powder like this, so I am just going to keep it and deal with it. I know the price is attractive, but you get what you pay for -- look elsewhere for your hing.
