That Girl - Season One

This series was on heavy rotation in our household - five stars but pricey for DVDs
Definitely likeable on heavy rotation in our house for mom. Likeable enough and interesting. Was on prime for free for a long time and we watched it a lot for free all of the series. Then they pulled it. Wasn't to happy with the price of the DVD as each season was fairly highly priced and we watched the series of shows so much for quite some time we were almost burned out on heavy rotation. But we enjoyed the series so much even though it was going to pass into light rotation I decided to purchase the DVDs anyways. There are a few bonus features on season 1 and maybe one other season. A nice addition on the DVDs not on the long previously free Prime versions of the show which used to be free to watch. And it probably was on Prime as a free show for a long time. The added two shows or show pilot commentary from on of the shows was one benefit. DVD price for each season was expensive for a TV series compared to some like the Flying Nun series of DVDs but it's probably worth it for That Girl fans. Enough interesting 60s clean nostalgia to be enjoyable for seniors and that makes it five stars for all the DVDS but for the price of the DVD's I hope the main actors or their heirs got some royalties from the high price of the product. Something like the Flying Nun is much more budget friendly as a series around the same time frame.

I was so glad that they had a bonus feature with Marlo Thomas
My mom and I used to watch this when I was a little girl and I gave this to her for Easter and she was so excited. I was so glad that they had a bonus feature with Marlo Thomas. If you love Marlo Thomas and That Girl you will love this set! It's so nice to watch old comedies with a little bit of spunk and Sass but without all of the garbage that is coming out on TV today. I am buying all the old classics so that I can sit and watch them instead. Thank you for making these available! I will be ordering the rest of seasons for my mom's birthday.

Simply a wonderful show with a brains.
After watching seasons 1-4, I am astounded at the chemistry and acting ability of both Marlo Thomas and Ted Bessell. I really don't think there was ever any on-TV chemistry better than theirs'. Marlo is a charm of intelligence, insecurity and goofiness. Bessell plays off of her like a prince. This is truly an American show that you shouldn't miss.

Love it!!
That Girl was ground breaking for it's time - it was the first and before Mary Tyler Moore. That Girl started the whole young, single, independent woman making it on her own in NY, NY. This TV series is a fun and wholesome sitcom that everyone can enjoy. It's early mid-1960's comedy with lots of imaginative plots, lessons learned, family, and friendships. Nostalgic entertainment. I'm so glad I have the entire series!!

That Girl, That Couple, That Series is a must buy
I'm writing the same review for Seasons One, Two and Three. If you are considering purchasing Season 3 of That Girl, I'll presume you're already familiar with this wonderfully entertaining sitcom. If you haven't purchased Seasons One and Two, stop now and purchase them. For those of us who know the series, Season Three will not disappoint. Ann (Marlo Thomas) is still delightfully kooky. Donald (Ted Bessell)--the best boyfriend EVER--is still funny, smart, handsome, warm, tender, affectionate, compassionate. No wonder I loved this show as a teenager. Even now as a mature woman, I firmly believe this show should be required viewing for every man who wants to learn how to really love a woman. Buy it. Delight in it.

A Refreshing and Honest Comedy
I was a young child when "That Girl" was a sitcom on television. However, I remember it vaguely, from having watched it with my family. I remembered enough about it to want to watch it now, as an adult, to see how I would feel about it at this stage in my life. I am definitely glad that I purchased "That Girl" and went down memory lane, watching this show. It is delightful! Marlo Thomas is a definite breath of fresh air and vitality as she portrays Ann Marie. Her energy, enthusiasm for life, her honest approach toward everything is marvelous. Her character (aside from the fashions that were worn during the show's original time) has not gone out-of-style -- not by a long shot! The situations displayed in each episode, the comedy lines and funny story plots are just as funny today as they were back when the episodes aired originally. The same situations occurring in each episode could definitely occur in today's world as well. The other characters playing alongside Ann Marie all relate very well with the main character and have a hilarious personality, too - everything blends well to bring about a truly good show. The reason I began "going back" to shows of the 60s and 70s, times when I was a kid, is because now, as an adult, I miss the kind of "clean comedy" that we enjoyed back then. Family entertainment of those days is rapidly disappearing in today's television - I thought I'd capture it by going back in time for a visit - "That Girl," "The Andy Griffith Show," and "Walton's Mountain" have been my choices so far and I haven't regretted purchasing boxed sets of each of these.

Refreshing
Who can say anything bad about sweet Ann Marie, the best thing since Lucy Ricardo? This entire series proved Marlo Thomas could act, (better even than her father), while maintaining the innocence of the standards of that time, That Girl did manage to broach some controversial subjects. This was the first time a single girl was portrayed on TV as a viable life choice. I think Mary Tyler Moore watched this and based her own show on it. Besides, LOL, I was a young male when this show was on, it was really (deleted), LOL.For me and my older brother, the only other actress on TV at the time that beat Marlo was the magnificent Elizabeth Montgomery, in Bewitched. Sorry, that's puberty! These many years later, That Girl still stands out as a great show. I bought this wondering if I'd like it as much now, as I did when it was first on TV, I do. Ditto for the other actors on the show, they don't make shows this good anymore. Buy it, I bought four seasons so far.

That Girl Season 1
In the flapper era, Clara Bow was the It girl. In the liberated 1960s, Marlo Thomas was all That. Her groundbreaking character, Ann Marie, opened the door for a new generation of independent women on TV who just might make it after all. Ann was not a wife, mother, daughter, girlfriend, ditzy neighbor, sidekick, or fantasy object (neither genie nor witch). She was something new and contemporary, an aspiring actress who leaves home to pursue her career in New York City. "You did a wonderful job helping me grow up, but now I'm up," she sweetly tells her overprotective parents (an Emmy-worthy Lew Parker and Rosemary DeCamp) in "Goodbye, Hello, Goodbye." That Girl was not a total break from TV convention. In this inaugural season, she has a kinda kooky neighbor and Rhoda-antecedent, Judy (Bonnie Scott). And she has a boyfriend, magazine writer Donald Hollinger (Ted Bessell), whom she meets cute in the first aired episode, "Don't Just Do Something, Stand There." Ann and Donald are one of TV's great comedy teams. They have a delightful Barefoot in the Park-like chemistry, with Ann the vivacious, more free-spirited one, and Donald the more practical one. One of their best episodes is "Anatomy of a Blunder," in which Donald suffers every disaster and indignity en route to meet Ann's father for the first time. Thomas was honored with a Golden Globe award for this season, and the series established her as "talented, unusual, a bright new face" (to quote the want ad Ann is desperate to answer in "You Have to Know Someone to Be an Unknown").One of the other kicks of reuniting with That Girl is the stellar roster of veteran character actors and future stars. Dabney Coleman, Bernie Kopell (Get Smart, The Love Boat), and Ronnie Schell (Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.) are regulars this season. Guest stars include Sally Kellerman and George Carlin in "Break a Leg," Rob Reiner and "Terry" Garr in "This Little Piggy Had a Ball" (the inevitable bowling-ball-stuck-on-the-toe episode), and a pre-All in the Family Carroll O'Connor as an amorous opera singer in "A Tenor's Loving Care." That Girl is so-'60s, but as with The Dick Van Dyke Show, on which series creators Sam Denoff and Bill Persky previously worked, the literate, character-driven comedy holds up remarkably well.Product DescriptionThat Girl ran five seasons on ABC (following Bewitched) from 1966-1971 at a time when the three broadcast networks captured 95% of the viewing audience. Marlo Thomas' character, Ann, was groundbreaking as an independent female forging her own way and forever changed the manner in which women were portrayed on TV, influencing the development of many of the other successful female-lead shows that followed, from The Mary Tyler Moore Show to Kate & Allie and more.Wildly popular, That Girl received four Emmy® nominations, as well as a Golden Globe Award for Thomas for Best TV Star Actress. The That Girl cast included Ted Bessel (Hollinger), Ruth Buzzi, George Carlin, Dabney Coleman, Rosemary DeCamp and Lew Parker (Lou Marie) and featured such notable guest stars as Milton Berle, Ethel Merman, Carl Reiner and Danny Thomas (Marlo's father). This 5-DVD box set features all 30 half-hour episodes from the historic first season plus:* Original That Girl pilot episode* "The Making Of That Girl Featurette" with Marlo Thomas* That Girl Promos* That Girl In New York with Marlo Thomas and Bill Persky* Audio commentaries with Marlo Thomas and Bill PerskyRegion 1
