One of the best
Finally! I don't have to spend half the day mixing and measuring all the different flours to get a loaf of sandwich bread! I agree with some of the other reviewers that it has a slightly beany aroma while baking...bit of a beany taste too...but very faint, and certainly better than all of the other gluten free AP flours I've ever used. My first loaf with this flour was fine. My son will even eat it. For my next bread making session, however, I think I am inclined to add some extra rice flour to this to further mute the bean like aftertaste in the bread. You will enjoy the smooth texture of the breads you bake with this flour. It is a nice break from the grainy texture of rice flour breads, and it will produce a lighter, softer bread, in my opinion. UPDATE: I've been experimenting with this flour. It's ok for just plain sandwich loaf, but I have fallen in love with adding extra oil or ghee (1 Tbsp), dehydrated, minced onions (2 Tbsp), 1/4 cup extra water, and either 1 clove finely minced fresh garlic or 1 Tbsp. garlic powder. What you get for the extra ingredients is a heavenly smelling, onion-y, garlic-y loaf of bread that works great with sandwiches or as toast. Try this bread, toasted, with a patty melt...YUM!

Good product
Great product. I have used for years. Can be used in many non gf recipes just by adding xanthan gum.

Great substitute for wheat-based flour, and worth the extra expense
I make delicious pancakes and biscuits with this chick-pea-based flour and they are gluten-free and healthy. Adding a bit (1/4 teaspoon) of xanthum gum to the recipe is a must or the texture will be unacceptable. Xanthum gum is also gluten-free and one 6-ounce bottle has lasted me over 2 years. You will get an even lighter consistency is you first sift the flour through a strainer, plus you then use a lot less of it. Make sure you get the package with the red label. I was once sent the GF flour with a light blue label, which is the flour made out of rice, not chick peas, and I did not like the results. BTW, check all the offerings for this product because the prices vary widely. Usually I can find it for what averages out to about $6.00 or $6.50 per 22-oz. bag.

Best for GF quick breads
My favorite when baking GF quick breads and pizzas, unlike many GF mixes, it contains the right balance of flours for good baking results, flavor and nutrition. The ingredients include high protein garbanzo bean flour, potato starch (which lightens the mix making rising easier) tapioca flour (for a yummy chewiness), white sorghum flour (which has the most similar flavor to wheat in my opinion) and fava bean. I've read reviews of others who don't care for the bean flours but those are important flours giving body and chewy texture, while being much higher in protein than some other GF flours used alone like plain white rice flour. Whether you are baking goods that are highly flavored with spices like cinnamon, vanilla, chocolate chips, almond, or pizza ingredients โ they produce crowd pleasing results. That said there are better mix recipies when baking YEAST breads or when you need a plain, light cake. I prefer to mix my own yeast bread mixes and my favorite is still the one found in Gluten-Free 101: Easy, Basic Dishes Without Wheat Paperback by Carol Fenster. Have used this product for years and judging by the fans of my baking it's a five star hit.

A Lifesaver in the kitchen!
Can you imagine drowning in your kitchen and someone throwing you a life-line? This is kinda how I felt when the doctor put my son on a gluten free diet for life and then I discovered Bobs Redmill all-purpose flour. For a mother of five and on a tight budget I knew we could not afford the pre-mixed packages as often. I ran out and bought a small bag to try it out first. Now the wet dough does have a strong beany odor and is very different to work with than regular wheat dough, but the recipes were just simple, and the beany smell was NOT there once it was baked. Ive been using it for pizza crusts, loaf sandwhich bread, pancakes, waffles, corn bread, and banana bread. (lots of recipes on Bobs website) Just follow the instructions-room temp. ingredients, add xantham gum, and pre-heated oven. Ive had no problems and all five of my kids have not complained once with our new baked goods! Then to see it on Amazons subscribe and save I was so happy to save an extra percentage and get free shipping. I am also ordering the Annies GF Mac n Cheese, the GF Nut thins carckers, and the GF Nature Valley Almond Crunch bars. Slowly Im building up my amazon subscriptions and actually my time in the specialty stores reading small print will soon be very minimal. Thanks to Amazon!

They'll never know it's gluten-free
After making my own gluten-free all-purpose flour mix (based on Jules Shepard's recipe) I decided to just make things easier on myself and give Bob's Red Mill All-Purpose Gluten-Free Baking Flour a try. It turned out to be cheaper than individually buying all the gluten-free flours and starches too. I have been very pleased with this flour and use it cup-for-cup in place of wheat flour in all my recipes. I've made many kinds of cookies, cornbread, pizza crust, brownies, pie crust, quick breads, etc. (with the addition of the recommended amount of xanthan gum added in) and they've all been great! People haven't even know my baked goods were GF until I told them. :) I haven't had much luck making rolls or breads with this flour though. They've turned out too dense IME, but YMMV. All-in-all a great product for what I need it for and the price can't be beat.

Routine monthly order!
Have read others reviews. I really like this bread. Have made some modifications. I do add one teaspoon xanthum gum and an extra egg otherwise it falls apart. Sort of reminds me of a rye bread. The onion flavor is noticeable. As close to rye flavor as I have had. Makes a pretty decent Reuben. Have missed this sandwich so I find it acceptable. Also is a wonderful addition to dressing if dried and mixed with a lighter gf bread for stuffing that turkey. Give it a try. This review is for the Bob's Red Mill GF Hearty whole grain bread mix. BUT...I ALSO REORDER THIS FLOUR MIX. WORKS WELL WITH MANY USES! I used to mix my own general purpose GF flour mixes. This is truly awesome! And EASY!

BUGGED
I purchased this flour to make a quick, gluten-free biscuit recipe that a friend gave me and it has worked great for that recipe. Tonight, I decided to make a peanut-butter pie for my hubbie's birthday. Feeling lazy, I used the all-purpose flour to make the pie crust (instead of mixing my own flour mixture...which I usually do!). Well...the garbanzo bean flour so many reviewers have complained about made the dough horribly bitter. I added some confectioner's sugar to sweeten it. I ended up with a gooey mass of something that I plopped into a pan and baked so as not to waste it! I had to start all over again and made a cereal crust instead. Double the trouble, double the mess! THAT's what I get for being lazy! Anyway, the point is, this flour is great for breads, biscuits, rolls, and so forth, but NOT for anything sweet! Don't use it for your cakes, cookies, pie crusts, etc. You won't get the flavor you expect! Perhaps it should be renamed, "Some Purpose Flour!" Happy baking! UPDATE: Originally, I emphasized that this flour is not for all purposes. Well, now it seems it is for no purpose at all because it is full of bugs! I keep my flour in Lock 'n Lock containers and none of my other flours have suffered the same fate (in the same cupboard). This leads me to believe that the little buggers were already in the flour when I got it... I'll be looking for another flour mix now!
