Whether you just bought your first sewing machine or have been sewing for years, Martha Stewart’s Encyclopedia of Sewing and Fabric Crafts will open your eyes to an irresistible range of ideas. A comprehensive visual reference, the book covers everything a home sewer craves: the basics of sewing by hand or machine, along with five other time-honored crafts techniques, and step-by-step instructions for more than 150 projects that reflect not only Martha Stewart’s depth of experience and crafting expertise, but also her singular sense of style. Encyclopedic in scope, the book features two main parts to help you brush up on the basics and take your skills to a new level. First, the Techniques section guides readers through Sewing, Appliqué, Embroidery, Quilting, Dyeing, and Printing. Following that, the Projects A to Z section features more than 150 clever ideas (including many no-sew projects), all illustrated and explained with the clear, detailed instructions that have become a signature of Martha Stewart’s magazines, books, and television shows. An enclosed CD includes full-size clothing patterns as well as templates that can be easily produced on a home printer. Fabric, thread, and tool glossaries identify the properties, workability, and best uses of common sewing materials. And, perhaps best of all, when you need it most, Martha and her talented team of crafts editors offer you the reassurance that you really can make it yourself. The projects are as delightful as they are imaginative, and include classic Roman shades, hand-drawn stuffed animals, an easy upholstered blanket chest, a quilted crib bumper, French knot-embellished pillowcases and sheets, and Japanese-embroidered table linens, among many others. With gorgeous color photographs as well as expert instruction, this handy guide will surely encourage beginners and keep sewers and crafters of all experience levels wonderfully busy for many years to come. Review: Excellent Book - Im giving it a 4 star because it was written in 2011 and it comes with a CD The pattern are on the CD . Some of the crafts so far I can't do because of the patterns being on the CD but others I can work around that or there is no pattern on the CD ..but fornthe instructions on sewing is excellent so I do wish I could give it a 5 star..it is still very worth buying Review: It is a fantastic crafts and knitting, sewing, dyeing reference - This book is a godsend: it has many of the features I was trying to get familiar with as a new immigrant to the US. Ms. Stewart's detail-oriented explanations and minuscule, to the "T" information makes every project a breeze. Additionally, very convenient templates are ready for printing on included in the book CD. Photos of most important aspects of projects are included as are shopping lists. The very first pages of setting up a sewing shop with a tip of taping little baskets in drawers under the sewing table top is very helpful, with this tiny detail to use tape stronger than the regular "scotch" tape used to fasten papers (with stronger tape the baskets will stay fastened). I yet have to find time to go through all the projects, but the first now will be to dye some vintage sheer window courtains that lost their white crisp sheer. And, Ms. Stewart's smiling face that is her signature emblem on all her products makes even the most hesitant first timer a little more confident that if the steps are followed, the end product will be just as beautiful as the ones in the pictures. I ordered some other books by her, for entertaining, Christmas and for general housekeeping (cannot remember the title off hand). These usually include recipes for a 100 guests, which I need to scale down to my smaller needs. The housekeeping book has tons of information, but is a bit lacking in detail as opposed to this one (in many cases it states to use mild dishwashing soap or mild detergent as opposed to specific suggestions what to find in stores. Again, I am a first generation immigrant and do not necessarily know which ones are the "mild" ones). Thank you Ms. Stewart for this wonderful book and the others!

Great Techniques
Being relatively new to sewing, I was looking for a book with simple, straightforward instructions to practical projects. This book did not disappoint. There are plenty of projects to get you started from aprons to wall decor. There are smaller projects included to give you confidence to move on to some bigger projects, and simple techniques that add elegance to otherwise more plain fabrics. And one of my favorite aspects is that the patterns are all printable, so you can keep printing them. The price was more than reasonable for this book. I actually had it checked out from my local library for a solid month before I purchased it, and it's probably the best sewing book in my library do far!

This is why I love Martha!
I am a novice sewer and couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. While I agree with several of the other reviewers who take issue with the term "encyclopedia", this is really a terrific resource for a novice sewer and will undoubtedly be the first book I turn to when I need help on technique or if I want to try out a new skill with a simple project. The book introduces a variety of techniques with lovely drawings and Martha's signature gorgeous color photographs. While none of the techniques are reviewed in encyclopedic detail, you get enough to learn whether or not you want to delve deeper. The paper quality of the book is wonderful - glossy and sturdy. The projects all look approachable and simple. I must have bookmarked about ten that I can't wait to try. I am confident that I will be able to replicate the results in the pictures despite my limited sewing knowledge based on the instructions in the book. It's a classic and I am so glad that Martha decided to dedicate the entire book to sewing (as opposed to including information on crocheting, knitting, etc.).

Not for beginners but really good just the same.
I bought this after having reviewed the entire thing at a local B&N, and since I found over half of the projects are things I want to try out or I can change slightly to suit my needs, it is a good book for me. As per some of the other reviews, this is not a beginners' book, nor is it something I recommend for those that cannot think in a 3D mindset. Many of the projects I have to read and re-read the steps to get a clear visual in my mind what I will be doing to make the item. It really makes me focus on what I am doing, and that in turn helps me determine how or if I need to change anything. To date I have made the sock-doggies for my son, the wrap a-line skirt, and used Martha's technique for printing on canvas curtains to make additions to some store-bought curtains I have for a guest bedroom. I have also really enjoyed the beautiful images in this book and have gathered ample home decor and organization ideas from it.

Floricana
