Of biblical value...
What you should consider: Do I want usable information to persue development or do I want a picture book? This book has been the fundamental basis for glaze development since its publication with only small variations in 9 printings, the most recent was a section added on crystaline glazes. This book is NOT a picture book. This book is NOT a recipe book. It is a starting place that carefully analyses every aspect you can encounter in glaze development at the fundamental level. If you want a picture slash recipe slash development book look at robin hoppers book. Its the only one that I've found to contain useful information and pretty pictures albeit the pictures overwhelm the majority or the book and the information underwhelms. I would state this as the book for beginners to begin understanding akin to the introduction to college chemistry. It establishes limits of glazes basic components and development methods. However be aware that most of the firing information is at cone 10. If you fire at cone 6 like so many of us you will have to adapt further research into your development.

I bought this product for my fiance. He just got into pottery. I would say if you aren't familiar with chemistry, this book might not be for you.

Of biblical value...again!
As I reviewed Rhodes first book I shall make this short, my opinion has changed little from successive printings. Changes from previous printings are minimal, this printing contains a newish section on crystalline glazes, still a phenomenal resource with contents sticking to facts rather then a Vogue magazine resorting to photographs of contemporary art to fill volume requirements. Focus remains on FUNCTIONALITY, instead of elaborate discussions on glazes that have high toxicity and are only useful on museum pieces and used once in a lifetime. For such discussion and imagery please see Robin Hopper's published works, which serve well as delightful coffee table features for intellectual suppositories. Information remains within the confines of well available materials as do matrices, still much at cone 10, so some adaptation is needed if you fire at cone 6. Absolutely invaluable reference resource.

Clay and Glazes for the Potter
This is an excellent book for all ceramicists/potters. I purchased as a text for a pottery class and use it as a reference book all the time.

Seminal work on how clay and glazes are formulated
If you are a potter, and are interested in the "why" of things, you need to read this book. It contains many scientific answers to those "why" questions, and provides some formulas for "how" to make your own glazes that perform in a consistent manner. It is easy to throw ingredients together and hope for the best. But it is through scientific formulation and dedicated testing that a potter can make some glazes that perform as expected time after time. The book also provides some trouble shooting if your glazes underperform. This is your reference for all things scientific in clay and glaze formulation.

Trash of a book
A college student might as well have photocopied most of the the pages from the original book, I say most because its missing about 100 pages, the "photos" are bad photocopied images, text is not even centered on the pages and the paper is the stuff out of your home printer. Terrible quality book. Sure there is some info but if its a book you plan on trying to keep for more than a few months don't buy this reprint

Best book on Ceramics, despite its age!
This will tell you everything you need to know, and is well written. The introduction is a thing of beauty in terms of writing. I have been a potter for over 40 years and it is still my stalwart. Highly recommended!

Experienced potters would find it useful.
This edition replaced one I lent to someone and lost some years ago. I have found it to be just as useful now as it was then, and my experience since then has greatly increased! Bridget Aldridge.
