Great cup mute
Finally, Humes and Berg has started making all metal adjustable cup mutes. This is a great mute, is has a good sound and is very solid. I have a Holton with a 10 inch bell and this fits in nicely, leaving enough room between the cup rim and bell to be adjustable. It also works very well as a straight mute when the cup is removed, great to have to lug one less mute around. The only complaint is I had to add a bit of tape around the mute to make the cup stay in place, but I assume this is common for all adjustable cup mutes.

This one is notably more "beefy" and has a very nice centered sound on Bass Trombone
I got this to replace a Dennis Wick Cup mute that was getting rather beat up due to the thin aluminum of it's construction. This one is notably more "beefy" and has a very nice centered sound on Bass Trombone. I'm very happy with it as a replacement. It doesn't really show in the pictures or the description, but like the Dennis Wick, this is an adjustable model - very versatile and you can "shape" the sound or use it as a straight mute. Also great if you own several horns with different shaped bell flares.

Definitely a great mute for the price that I got it for
High quality bass trombone mute. My only issue is it kind of kills tone when playing in addition to making my horn incredibly sharp (which will happen with most mutes). Definitely a great mute for the price that I got it for, however when my mute finally bites the dust, I will be looking elsewhere. A great mute for early professional players.

Humes & Berg 241BK Stonelined Swish Wha Black Alum Trumpet mute
Fortunately, I found out that this is a great mute. Especially, for the price, which is nearly half of other brands similar products. Plus this mute sounds just as good as the Jo-Ral Bubble Mute. Sometimes I find with poor quality mutes that it is near impossible to get down to the low F# or just play in the the basement of the trumpet register. However, I get all the notes to pop out and sing in tune with this mute. Actually, the last big band gig I did I only had Humes & Berg mutes congregated around the bottom of my music stand. The Cup Mute and Bucket Mute are fantastic and widely used by professionals and this Swish Wha/ Harmon Mute is no slouch either.

Humes & Berg Swish Wha Bubble Mute, the only company that makes mute in this color
Was in a rush to get a wah wah mute for a gig, and came across the Humes & Berg alternative to the most well-known harmon's, and thought I'd give it a try. Aesthetically very pleasing, and not at all intrusive if you're into stealthy stuff (i.e. black/gunmetal products) like I do. From my understanding they also multiple versions in silver, copper, and even a very nice candy red, with the latter definitely being a show stopper (that, or great for xmas gigs).Instead of the wood particle grip shown in the picture, mine came with black foam surround. When I gave it a go, I did what I do to all my mutes: give it a good twist or two as I insert it to secure it in place. This however had caused the foam to slightly begin to rip at one location, for about a 1/3cm length; I had felt like I had to baby the securing action since then, although I had yet to experience it from dropping out of the bell. The metal of the bubble mute gives off a strong sense of sturdiness and confidence, with a rather thick and hard metal as compared to its competitors. I don't foresee myself denting it anytime soon even if I do drop it. The paint appears to be anodized/powdercoated on as well, and from the short time I have had with it thus far (2 road gigs), it appears to be just as sturdy against blemishes and scratches. Now the most important part: sound. The traditional Harmon wah wah mute gives off a very nice mellow tone, both stem in and out, and the Humes & Berg is very very close, albeit it gives off a hair fuller, yet a tiny-bit less bright of a tone. Don't get me wrong, it does its job great and I'm in no way knocking this mute, but simply pointing out that there is a very-very-slight difference in tone when comparing the two. I personally love the micro distinction, whether or not it's for you will be for you to give it a trial; plus I do think that it will be hard to tell apart for the untrained ears.So all in all, out of full scores of 5, I'd give it:Looks: 5Fit: 5Paint: 5Metal construction: 5Grip construction: 1 (notice I had to separate the 2 'constructions' scores as I didn't want to drag down the praise for the metal)Sound: 5Price: 4In summation I'd give this a 4 to 4.5. Everything is great for this mute, except for the foam grip. Not being able to play at gigs with peace of mind does take away from its experience, even though I haven't experienced any drops yet (knock on wood).I may look into contacting amazon or Humes & Berg directly for a replacement with wood particle grip to rectify this. But in the mean time, this mute is definitely worth checking out if not for all the other great qualities.

This is my first bubble style mute
This mute was less expensive than some others, such as Jo-Ral, and I've almost always liked Humes and Berg mutes I've purchased. I wanted the red and white Swish Wa, but this black one was $10 less, and should sound the same. This mute seems to have a brass removable stem, and is much heavier that the harmon mute, especially with the stem in the mutes. The sound of this mute without the stem is a little different than the Harmon mute sound without the stem. In my opinion, I can get a broader range of the sound color with the swish Wa mute by varying how far of the stem is sticking out of the mute, compared with varying the Harmon stem length visible. Again, this is only MY opinion--your results may vary. In case you are wondering, the Swish Wa and the Harmon have different diameter stems and are not interchangeable.

The product does not work as intended
I bought this mute as a gift to my son in law that lives outside the USA. When he tried to use the mute, he discovers that id totally Muted the flugelhorn, making impossible to know if the practicing is right or not. Other muting devices work by canceling much noise but letting enough of it to know if the practice is going OK. That is not true with this device! It's a shame since it's beautifully made and weights quite nothing. It seems that the manufacturer erroneously advertise it as a great tool for learning. You cannot learn anything if you do not listen some notes coming out, muted enough but not totally.
