One of our best friends is from London and one night she was telling me how one of her favorite things is a grilled cheese with Marmite. I said that I had never had Marmite, and everyone laughed and said that it was terrible. I countered with, "How can something so terrible have lasted this long, it can't be that bad." this is why people buy things at 3am on Amazon haha.When it arrived, it smells like salty yeast and spreads like cool molasses. I spread some on a half slice of toast and as soon as it hit my mouth, I immediately started to salivate. I can't really explain the flavor as well as others can, but all I can say is that it scratched an itch that I never knew I had. It made me want more and I didn't know what it really was.Full review, I loved it. I also highly recommend making a cheddar sandwich with it.

Background info:I am from the U.S. Had never tried either Marmite or Vegemite before. I purchased a small bottle of both to do a taste comparison.Tried them both on buttered toast with just a small amount scraped on the surface.Results:I actually like them both....but, there are differences. Both are an acquired taste. Both are salty and savory in flavor. Marmite is more sharp tasting; a bit more tangy with a slightly nutty, bitter aftertaste. It is more intense than Vegemite.Vegemite, in both flavor and aroma, reminds me more of beef boullion, even though it is vegan with no animal in it. Because it is not as intense, I found that I was spreading more of it on my toast to get the flavor I wanted.Bottom line:Though I liked both products, in the end, Marmite edged out Vegemite as my favorite.If you like sharp or pungent cheese and you enjoy dark beers like porters or stouts, I think you will love Marmite.I find myself looking forward to my morning coffee with buttered toast and Marmite!

This arrived faster than I thought it would and the jar was slightly bigger than I thought it would be.The glass is very thick and I don't think you really have to worried about it being broken during shipping unless someone is really tossing the heck out of those boxes.I bought this because I have just recently returned to being vegan and heard about how people in the UK enjoy this and vegans like to partake in it because of the abundance of B vitamins. The slogan on the jar reads "Love it or Hate it" which is exactly what everyone would tell me when I ask about it and after trying it I can definitely see why they say this!When the package arrived my boyfriend and I were very excited and made up some toast, put a serving of earth balance (it's a vegan butter alternative) and then put a light spread of Marmite over the top of it.The smell is a pit strong. To me it smelt like miso paste, but my boyfriend said he couldn't place what the smell was like.We were a bit hesitant biting into it and we could definitely tell where I put too much Marmite down in some spots as well as understand the slogan of "Love it or Hate it!" but it wasn't bad. As long as you use it as they say to, which is very lightly, it's very good! Salty, but good.My boyfriend is a bit on the fence about it. He says it's one of those things were he can't tell if he actually loves it or hates it yet xD but it's interesting and he's glad he tried it.I will definitely be using this in my vegan cooking to help with gravy or broth. I'm very glad I bought this product and I think it's really something you should be encouraged to try and maybe just keep handy in your kitchen.When this jar runs out, I'm going to be sure to buy a second jar in a larger size.

Even though this is a really cheap product in Britain it’s not the case when you are importing it. So the price is over inflated but really not bad when compared to other sites which have been extortionate. I was just glad to get it, I miss it so much. Marmite/ you either love it or hate it. It’s in comparable to anything else. There’s a Australian product called Vegemite which is similar but not the same. It is more mellow than Marmite.A lot of the time it depends how you try Marmite. People spread it too thickly on toast and then gag. You’ve got to do it in incredibly tiny line 1mm thick scant ribbons across hot buttery toast. if you’d like that, you can work your way up from there. it’s great on any neutral veggies like cauliflower or baked potato but GO EASY with this stuff it’s potent. The less you use the better- and then the more often you want to add it to foods. It also really revs up the flavor of stirfry’s and other dishes but start with a 1/2 teaspoon Or less. And never eat it off the spoon it’s not Nutella. * Enjoy *

I am a bit of food experimenter (the opposite of a picky eater if you will) and love to try out new foods so when I heard of Marmite I thought why not give it a try? Holy-moly what a big mistake! I literally licked a bit of it from the seal on top of the container and almost threw up. Being a supertaster I generally taste foods much more intensely and this one was definitely beyond "an acquired taste" as some of the other reviewers are claiming. I'd describe it as a form of self-abuse or a prank product - you know the kind of thing you'd give your friends to see their grossed out reactions. Imagine taking the hoppiest beer you can think of and concentrating that flavor (drying most of the water so only a gooey substance is left behind) that will get you in the ballpark of the flavor of Marmite. I then had another terrible idea which was to see if I could somehow use it as a flavor additive. NOPE. It destroyed the flavor of everything I used it in. Off it went - into the trash. NEVER AGAIN. Oh and Vegemite from Australia? It's also out of the question. Anything with the word "mite" is out forever.

This is a very interesting way to get vitamin B's.
