Loved it - maybe 1/2 star less than the books that follow in the series, but still a great read, and a good series foundation
This book stands on its own and is a good read. Within the structure of the, "Badge of Honor," series, this book sets the ground work for the series. It establishes the setting, the characters, the structure and the internal forces in the police department, how they got that way, the city politics, and so on. You get to know the characters and see them in action as they do what they can to do their jobs while also dealing with the other personalities and politics both in and out of the police department. By the time you complete this book and move on to the next in the series, "The Victim," the characters and the internal organization of the police department are like comfortable old shoes. These are guys you are glad to know. It is fun getting to be that fly on the wall and seeing good-guy cops doing what they do. I am not looking forward to reaching the end of the series because it will leave a void that I hope I can fill with something I enjoy as much as this.

W. E. B. Griffin
I currently own every one of Mr. Griffin's novels. They come in about six series. This book and one other were needed to complete the set. I enjoy all of his books, but I am not sure where to rate some of them. I will say my favorite is the Badge of Honor Series about the Philadelphia Police Department (Currently an eight novel series). But right up there is his series on The (Marine) Corps (a ten novel series currently). There is a new Badge of Honor novel coming out in June. I can't wait.

Another great read
Rereading the series before I get to the newer ones. Just as great the third or fourth time reading them as the first.

a real keeper
It was difficult to put this book down. I couldn't believe how quickly I read it. Griffin drew me right into the police effort to catch this serial racist. The public doesn't understand how difficult it is to be a policeman. In this story the politicians got their comeuppance. Hooray!

Bill Butterworth writing as W.E.B. Griffin writes another great story
W. E. B. Griffin, AKA Bill Butterworth, is one of my favorite writers. His stories are always well written, entertaining and informative. He puts life into his stories. His characters are believable and likable. If they were real people, the lead characters are people you would want to know or emulate. Great stories by a great writer.
