will this adapter fit right into my astro a40's?

Yes, it has a small 2.5 mm auxiliary end that plugs directly into the left side of the Astro a40 headset. I purchased and people can hear me speaking and I can hear them. Works like advertised, at least for Halo 5 ;)

What size is the end of the cord?

the picture end fits snuggly into the xbox controller the other end (i assume) is the regular headphone jack (3.5mm) and fits directly into the A50 headset.

Does this item work with the Xbox One Elite controller

Honestly, I was unsatisfied with how this device performed with my Astro a50. No one could hear me, i had to speak loudly to barely be comprehended. I had better luck with just a straight aux cable.
