Great Fit and Function
This backpack is awesome. It fits two 32oz Nalgene bottles. I got the medium and it fits snug on my 40lb fluffy dog. I really like the slick material that doesn't collect dog hair. The D ring is metal and sturdy. 10/10 I would buy this one again. I like it just as much as the ruffwear one my other dog has. And it's easier to put on too. The Ruffwear one has to go over the head and the dog doesn't enjoy that. This one clips around the dog easily.

Overall great, but the D ring broke
I bought this backpack for a 6+ mile hiking trip and overall it held up amazingly. I have a 65 lb pit bull mix and I got the large and it fit him very well when it was adjusted to almost as tight as it could go. It was able to hold a normal plastic water bottle on each side, his poop bags, and a bag of food, with a little room to spare. There are also small pockets on the outside of the backpack which was nice, I kept my chapstick in one. One major issue was that the D ring that came on the pack broke within a couple of hours. Thank goodness we had his regular harness on underneath (and it hooks in the front) so it wasn’t too much of an issue, but if you have a strong dog that pulls I would not recommend using the D ring on this pack, it opened right up. If you have a harness that hooks on the back of your dog this pack will not work with it. Other than that I love this backpack, it stayed in place and didn’t lean to one side at all except for when his leash pushed it that way since it latches in the front, but still nothing major. The material is strong and didn’t leave any marks on my dog even though he was pulling a lot before the D ring broke. Overall would recommend this product if you have a harness that would work with it or a dog that doesn’t pull.

Very pleased, good quality, but there are TWO versions being sold by Amazon--not mentioned in the description.
Ours was different than what was shown, which explains some of the questions and reviews. I expected a pack similar to what we had borrowed--a one piece pack that slipped over the dog. What we got (as others have mentioned) was in TWO pieces. There's the bottom part that has two slim, mesh pockets on the side, and then the "handle" on top. Then you slip over the "saddlebag" portion which hash an opening in the middle, so it goes over the protruding "handle". This actually attaches to the bottom piece with a plastic closer. I contacted Outward Bound with questions and they said it's their Quick Release version. So actually, it's two harnesses in one, once you clip it in place. You could use the under layer by itself, but we use both. Now that I know, looking carefully at the photo, I can see it doesn't match ours. Our trainer recommended it for our 18 month old 82 pound hound/lab mix as he's got LOTS of energy. She had the older version (which was the style we expected) and put water bottles on each side to make him work a bit harder. It does a good job at that. He does heel better with it on. I also put his empty poop bags in it. Once the bags are "used" I carry them, as it would make the pack unbalanced. I've had no problems with it shifting at all, even when he shakes. As far as size, we got the large. Our guy is BIG and at first we thought it was too small, but we re-adjusted the straps and it fits fine. The packaging said there was also an XL, but I haven't seen it for sale anywhere, and he doesn't need it. (Some people think he's a Great Dane mix, nope) To get it off, we release the two side/bottom clips, then pull it over his head, as one piece. It's a little bit of a hassle and it may be easier to loosen the front straps, but it would be a hassle. To put it on, we slip it over his had and back and put his right foot thru, then strap him in.. We've had it about 2 weeks, and follow the advice of leaving the side zipper pockets with the bottles open slightly, to decrease the pulling on the zipper. However, there doesn't seem to be an issue. It's made much better than the picture or description shows. The top/under section of mesh, actually is quite soft, It's not really padded, but neither is it just rough mesh. He hasn't shown any discomfort from the straps or the mesh. We only use two bottles, one on each size, as our trainer tried four and it was just too heavy for him. We're not trying to weigh him down, just add a little more to his work out.

Four Replacements, all fell apart within weeks. Basically disposable
I loved this backpack and so did my dog… Until it fell apart. It’s such a pretty color and so cute on him and seems pretty comfortable, but only had 10 days when it started to fray and the seams started to come apart. By the three-week mark you can see the huge tear completely in one pocket. unusable with items falling out. This was one walk a day, not even real hiking. I was just using it to wave him down I was just using it to wave him down. He’s carrying pretty ordinary stuff that a dog pack should be durable enough to handle. Food and water, pretty heavy but isn’t that the idea? i’m getting a replacement so I’ll try again on the off chance this was a dud, but if this one doesn’t last I will send it back for a full refund. UPDATE: got replacement, second one developed same tears and holes and worn spots within a week. Just carried simple water and food. Going back for refund. Really too bad. Update number two: i’m now on my fourth pack because this is the one my fosters Rescue insists on buying him even though they don’t last. I just added photos of packed number four and how completely it ripped. Buy this pack if you just want to keep adding to a landfill. Absolutely ridiculous that they can’t make this more adorable. What a waste

medium seemed like a better fit
Bought a Medium for my 60 lb Pitty/ American Bulldog mix. His chest measures 28 in. According to the sizing chart, I should've gotten a large. But upon researching other peoples' reviews, medium seemed like a better fit. It fits pretty well but will need to cut the waist strap to shorten it because I had to pull it as tight as it can go. At first, pouches kept leaning to one side. After redistributing the weight and tightening the straps, it seemed to fit snug and stays in place when my dog runs through bushes. He hasn't had any chafing anywhere, and items stay dry when he runs through water. When I take him hiking or backpacking, he carries all his food, nose sunscreen, a jar of mushers secret, a collapsible water/food bowl, a ball, and a few other items- all with room to spare. Definitely big enough to hold normal sized water bottles. Next trip I will try to attach a sleeping pad on it somehow. Will update on durability as we take more trips! All in all, really good dog backpacks for the price!

I got this so I could take my pup on longer trips and get him to carry some extra water for himself. Easy to get on, and he was very comfortable and happy in it immediately. The only issue is that you need to try and keep the loads of either side of the pack pretty evenly balanced, otherwise it starts to tilt. Sometimes Oz would do a big shake to rebalance it, but sometimes I'd stop to reposition it for him. I'd imagine this would be especially good for people with younger, more energetic dogs who are harder to tire out, as it definitely tires Oz out. Because of that (he's about 6 years old, and has arthritis though it hasn't curbed his enthusiasm for hikes), I didn't end up using it for longer hikes as it did leave him pooped sooner than usual, but have used it on our usual ones it has been great for that. He get loads of compliments on it when we run into people heading up our usual mountain. Oz is probably a hound/maybe some shepherd mix, wearing a medium

Lieferung aus den USA dauerte 14 Tage, also i.O.

Great product! Huge improvement from my husky's last backpack in terms of comfort and fitting. It is lightweight and he doesn't mind wearing outside of walk time too. Easy to adjust sizing but may take a little time to acclimatise dogs not used to backpacks (requires them to fit leg and head through loops). Here he is carrying 1kg of baked beans.

Now that we've used the pack, I'm really confused about some of the negative reviews here, so wanted to add my two cents, since the negative reviews almost stopped me from buying this. This is a fabulous day pack (we live downtown in a big city and it's perfect for our day trips and adventures, walking 1-3 hours on a normal terrain). It's a day pack, it's not advertised for use as a hunting or forest hiking pack, so I'm not sure why so many reviewers bought it for that purpose and then left bad reviews - there are more expensive and sturdy packs for those purposes. This pack does run a bit large - my boy is 37lbs and has a 24" chest, so according to the sizing charts a medium should fit him perfectly, however we had to tighten the medium a LOT and now the excess straps have to be wrapped and tucked in so they don't hang around his underbelly and trip him - I think a small would have fit him a lot better. It doesn't slide to the side as long as the weight in the pack is even on both sides, and it's VERY easy to put on and remove. I wasn't confused about the straps at all, like other reviewers were...it has the exact same type of adjustable straps as a human backpack has, and once the initial size adjustments are done, there are buckles on every strap to easily snap this on and unbuckle to remove it quickly and effortlessly. A lot of reviewers were critical about the pack sliding when their dog plays in it - we use this for walking distances in the city, and I remove it when we arrive at our destination, so my dog doesn't wear it when he's playing. The only negative feedback I have is that the straps can feel a bit rough rubbing against my dog's underbelly, so it would be nice if Outward Hound would consider adding a soft cover to protect the belly (like a seatbelt cover type material). However, this is an easy fix, if I sew on a piece of felt or cotton myself. A lot of people have complained about the D-ring coming off. I walk my dog with a collar/leash so cannot comment on the D-ring, since we'll never be using it. The materials are good quality and the straps are sturdy, and stay in place once they've been properly adjusted. Anyway, this is a fabulous purchase, if you buy it for the intended purpose. My dog seems comfortable wearing it, and the pockets are substantial enough to carry quite a few supplies, dishes, water, snacks, poop bags etc. It's everything I hoped it would be, and is fabulous for day trips around the city. I'm so pleased!
