Finally after searching for some time for a simple magnetic pick-up tool made in the USA I found one. This The Ullman states that it's 'Made in USA of US and Global Components'. The product itself feels good in your hand and has good-sized rubberized grooves for your fingers. It's about 24" long and the magnet is strong. One of the nice features is that the magnet is encapsulated in a non-ferrous material, so when you're going into hard to reach places, the sides of the magnetic head don't stick to components you don't want them to...reducing frustration when working in tighter metal spaces. The head where it connects to the telescoping rod, however, looks like it won't wear as well as the body, so we'll see how it lasts. Overall I'm quite happy!

I have been using Ullman magnets for many years and have found them to be very good. The telescopic handles hold up much better and the magnets are strong. They make several different models for different power levels. The Ullman GM-2 is one of the strongest. I also have the HT-2 & HT-3, These two have the sliding cap to keep the sides from sticking , and you may slide it up if not wanting to use it. I carried my HT-2 model for 3 years without any breakage, and it is still going. TS

I work in corrections, and tools like this are invaluable.... When they don't break after 2 days of using them. The main reason I bought this was to get small metal items from under and inside windowsills, The inmates like to hide things inside there and it's never a good idea just to stick you hand in there looking for them, I was able to recover razor blades, safety knives, hypodermic needles and even a shank,However, on my third day working, I went to extend the tool and it just kept going, came completely apart and it could not be put back together. So now I just have a metal pointy stick.Due to the poor quality of craftsmanship, I would not recommend this to anyone. Mine came apart that easily and it never even lifted any kind of heavy load (a few oz at max), actually it never LIFTED any load at all. Everything I grabbed was a horizontal movement. I would imagine that if you actually tried to pick up something that weighed the 2.5 lbs that this claims it can hold you would just end up with a pointy stick too!Now, if you are in the market for a collapsible pointy stick then this is perfect! And if you act now you get a free refrigerator magnet with..... a pointy end!!! Hurry while supplies last!

I bought this thinking it was a size suitable for picking up pins for sewing. My 4 year old loves playing with magnets and I bought this for him to play with thinking it would be must smaller. I was shocked to find out how large it is, my error. No problem, my kiddos love it and it gets a lot of rough play and often gets whacked around. It continues to work for us and holds up to a 2 and 4 year old. How this works for what it was actually built for, idk.

I don't think you want to make a habit of lifting 16lbs. It's okay if you keep the wand perpendicular to the ground/floor, but don't go waving it around with that much weight hanging out there. The magnet head is a bit too big for what I really wanted to use this for, but I'm glad I got it. My eyes ain't what they used to be, and when I drop wee teensy screws on the shop floor, this'll help me find them easier.

I use this to find lost stainless steel jewelry findings in hard to reach places. It does the job....Alternatively, I also keep this in my bag as a self-defense retractable baton. It's illegal to purchase a baton where I live. So I thought this is a good substitute. I haven't tested whacking something with this but I'll update this review if it falls apart doing so.

Works great I do peat control and use this to get traps under equipment every day all day and have had no issues. Is very sturdy and strong is the same that would get a a store now out of business. So I am glad I found this. The magnet is strong and can extend and retract easily and have had no issues. I use this 10-15 daily

Shipping time was pretty long, but figured it was worth the wait in savings. As a professional technician a telescopic magnet is a mandatory tool that is always in my pocket. Instead of spending twice as much for one off the tool truck I thought I'd give this a try. Unfortunately the magnet has fallen off a couple of times. The last time it fell off where I couln't retrieve it. So now I have a telescopic nothing. Useless. At least the tool trucks give you a lifetime warranty for their ridiculous prices.
