excellent
Ryan’s team is investigating a murder when another murder happens, then a hate crime occurs. So the team splits to cover both investigations. There’s a lot going on in this book, with a lot of action. Ryan once again puts himself in harm’s way. But I find these books so entertaining!

Seems unfinished
I'm a great fan of L. J. Ross - and this was a good novel. But the reason I have not given it five stars - which I would give to almost all her other books - is that there were loose ends. Without giving too much away - who exactly was the male perpetrator, and what were his motives? Otherwise - I'd recommend this novel as I would all of L. J. Ross's books.

A Timely Mystery
LJ Ross has done well in addressing some of the distressing issues facing the world today. DCI Ryan and company are short-staffed and faced with 2 major crimes occurring simultaneously...both requiring untangling misleading clues. A new character is introduced whom I would like to read more of...a soldier who found a home in service after being raised in the system only to have that home...and his health....damaged by an IED. His devastation puts him on the streets and isolated, only to become prey for some and a tool for others.I always feel that I have visited with old friends when a new DCI Ryan book appears...and look forward to more visits in the future.

Borderlands
This book was one of the most diverse books I have had the pleasure of reading. Of course, all LJ Ross books have been great, it is just that this one showed so much of the human condition as it is today! I thoroughly enjoyed the benefit of reading a book that put society today on the line! I Hope we all survive the onslaught of our current atmosphere of denial of the Right to Life of all our Citizens! We are One People!

Review
A fast paced, edge-of-your-seat thriller.Ryan and his team look into the murder of a young woman on an army artillery range. How did she get there?Denise and Frank settle in as parents to 10 yearold Samantha.Jack and Mel are a couple at last.A war veteran deals with homelessness and ptsd. And Ryan and his team must flush out a white supremacist group, and a serial killer. All in a day's work.Loved it!

The ending could have been more complete
There was a lot going on in this story, including a serial killer, a former soldier with PTSD, and a radical racist group. Oh, and a dog. Ryan managed to tie up all the loose ends, but Ross didn't bother to tell what happened to any but one of the people one came to care about or to explain how/why the serial killer became one and what his collection of trophies meant. Maybe other readers don't care about those things, but I don't want them left to my imagination.

Too many loose ends.
Was hoping for more closure on this story. Still a good read and will continue to follow these characters in the future.

Borderlands: A DCI Ryan Mystery
Another excellent book by the author Ross. It is her 14th book in the DCI Mystery Series and another very entertaining story involving the military, extremists, and traumatic experience of a soldier who in the end safes the day. Of course the members of DCI Ryan play their roles, especially the soon to be adopted daughter of his sergeant and his wife Denise and Ryann's wife Ann. A very good book and up to date with todays world worries. Looking forward the book 15!

Fast pace but...
By far not the best of Ross' books. I like them...mostly but this time...There is neither glory nor honour or anything heroic for someone to fight for "Queen and Country". Not in Great Britain and certainly even less in Afghanistan. Ross romanticises military life to the point where its critical. There is no peace to be gained by fighting.Additionally, this time she is overdoing the superhero-act on Ryan. Sorry to say but this book is a waste of time.

Borderlands
I’m from Northumberland and know a lot of the places LJ writes about. Her work is fantastic and I find it hard to make the books last long enough and can’t wait for the next one. Looking forward to her new series!

The Human Condition
Borderlands is a book that explores the reality of different people, different lives, different situations where consequences follow choices made by these people. The human condition changes from person to person, a mystery in itself. One thing never changes though is the choice we make between doing good or evil!! So many vulnerable people living borderline lives, each of them striving to make it to the next day, to overcome their troubles, their pasts, making choices that can ruin their lives or it can change them forever!! Then there's the psycopath that takes advantage of the vulnerable...a story of evil wanting to overcome good. Thank God LJ Ross still believes in the Good winning always. It's the story that pulls you in, as you leap from chapter to chapter, reading and holding your breath at each new chilling homicide...almost as if you are actually living the story through Ryan's eyes! Ross has done it again! If you like avventure, crime and police thrillers, then this book is for you! Enjoy!!!!

Compelling and emotional story
I love this series and there is a very good reason for that - each novel contains everything I look for in a book. Compelling story, great characters and an unrivalled sense of place, all of which we get in abundance. The DCI Ryan series by LJ Ross really does put the reader at the heart of Northumberland - carries you across every inch of parkland or cityscape, through every bog, brook or avenue - and throws you into the heart of the lives of the wonderful characters whose world we temporarily inhabit. It is a beautiful mix of thrilling action and heartfelt character study and all the richer for it.Never has that been more obvious than in Borderlands, a story which is both a murder investigation and a look into the more sentimental and emotional side of the main characters lives. There is a line drawn this time around, with Ryan and Frank, and Jack and Mel both off in their teams investigating to very different and seemingly unrelated crimes, whilst Denise is enjoying a moment of quiet domesticity with her new ward, Samantha, and Anna shares an insight into her life with Ryan that readers have been otherwise ignorant of.Ryan is faced with a very difficult and worrying case - the death of a young woman amidst and Army live fire training exercise, a woman who has no identity, and who should not have even been in the area with the exercise underway. Meanwhile, Jack and Mel are investigating a series of escalating race crimes in which the targets have all been various religious groups, each new crime seeming to move closer to claiming a fatality. These are two very different, but equally emotive crimes that draw you in and raise as many questions as they provide answers.Behind this we are introduced to another character, one who may hold the key to what is happening in at least one of the investigations, and LJ Ross has done a brilliant job of creating a damaged and unreliable witness who is, ultimately, a very sympathetic and principled character. She has acknowledged the plight os so many ex-servicemen and woven it into a story which will tug at the heart strings and have you rooting for the unnamed soldier who has been so badly let down by everyone. The main investigation is a complex one, but a story I think many readers will recognise. The author does a great job in building the sense of threat, of making the reader privy to the disturbed mind of a killer, and hiding their identity brilliantly until near to the end. The tension is high, the sense of threat always building, with ultimate feeling of overwhelming guilt never far from the surface, especially for the soldier who feels responsible for the mystery woman's untimely death. It is hard, at first, to see how all the different storylines will pull together, but you don't need to fear. The author is adept at keeping readers guessing but leaving us with a satisfying ending and that is exactly what you get once again.I've been sad to hear that some people have been critical of the amount of personal storyline which fed into this book this time. For me, that is one of the strengths of the series, the thing that sets it apart from other police procedurals. LJ Ross is not afraid to go to the emotional heart of her characters and bring it front and centre, and the sensitive nature of how she handles one quite significant plot point (and also a constant reader question) is brilliantly done. When you read the book you will understand, but for me it fit perfectly.Fans will love this book and I can't wait for more. Definitely recommended.
