Revell 1:196 USS Constitution

I had a lot of fun building this model! You just have to be patient. Some tips on building this ship:1) Testors Copper Enamel Spray works great on the hull!2) Take your time on the rigging! Secure the rigging with small dabs of Elmer's glue and let dry. Don't try to do all the thread rigging in one session.3) I took tan thread and wrapped it around tweezers and then soaked in glue...when the glue dried, I had nice loops of "rope" to set at the bottom of the masts. I even rigged the cannons.4). I sprayed the sails with white primer, then flat white...they ended up with a "tooth" feel that you swear feels like cloth!5) when rigging the sails, I took a sharp Xacto knife and methodically twisted small holes to run the thread through. TEDIOUS!6) When painting the deck boards, paint some individual boards slightly darker/lighter.Like any model or project, don't be in a rush, and best advice is to never build two sailing ships back to back...you'll need a break after rigging a ship...lol

This is the first model I have done in many years. Bought it to get started again and have something to do at night since most TV shows stink. The model is well molded with a minimum of flashing on the parts. This model is Small, and I am of geezer age. If your like me you will need plenty of light and tweezers for the parts. I bought this to pass the time and it is doing that for me. Take your time and have fun....remember it is small. I will build another model but next time get a larger scale. This model does come in a larger scale. I may try that one next time.

It took me about a week to build it (about over20 hours). A lot of very small parts that require a lot of patient to glue them together. I had to use a head microscope to work on this project. My son (10 years old) loves watching me to build it and he is very fascinated when the model is completed. Very beatiful ship with a lot of details and it is very nice to display. My wife likes the ship a lot too. When I started building, she was not mind to take a look, she thought it will be a cheap toy ship that could not be display but she changed her mind when she saw it completed.It is not for kids under 12, it is not easy to build but if you have patient, you should have no problem building it and all the parts are fit perfectly to me.

I’d hoped for better. This is a decent model but I was disappointed to find out that the middle (gun) deck wasn’t complete. There’s a large gap that will be visible if someone looks closely through the on deck holds.Still, it’s a well detailed model that’s fairly easy to assemble and if you use the advanced rigging option you’ll get a good looking model.

I was very disappointed with this model. I purchased it to keep me occupied and help me relax while recovering from surgery. Unfortunately it had the opposite effect and only made me frustrated. Supplied instructions are often very hard to follow. They could have made assembling this model much easier by simply providing some detailed images of the final result. The only photos available are on the box and too small to see any details. Many parts just didn't fit together tightly which affected the attachment of other parts. Too many parts broke away from the trees with unwanted attachment pieces larger than the details necessary to identify the piece. Also too many of the pieces that are supposed to fit with pegs into predefined holes, were impossible to insert. I'd like to mention that I called their customer service on one occasion when I was stumped and was very pleased with the response and help I received. My intent was to practice with this smaller scale, fewer pieces, model first and then invest in the larger sized, many more parts, model. I've read some good reviews on the larger model and can only assume that it's a very different product. After my experience however, I am afraid to invest the money and end up with the same disappointment.

This ship isn't intended for the novice modeler (though the box says 12 yrs & up) but it's easily doable in two days, assuming you're already well-stocked in paint & glue and have a decent collection of modeler's tools. Those are the oh-so-important items which you collect over the years that make model-making not only faster & easier but also leave you with a professional-looking project you can be proud of instead of an embarrassing waste of time and money that appears thrown together by an impatient child with shaky hands.This little tip may be of absolutely no use to anyone, but I use strictly super glue (both liquid & gel) to build plastic scale models, and have for years. It dries quickly and if you're adept with it you need very little to do a good job. Don't laugh until you've tried it.

Not like the model I built 30 years ago! This model is VERY SMALL - about 12” long. Very disappointing. Sails are cutouts. Standing rigging looks cheap. Do not recommend.

This is a great model. It is not for the novice, but someone with a little more experience will find the little challenges welcome. It has great detail for a model of this scale and price. The customer service at Revell was great to work with. One call to replace a part I damaged and they sent it out strait away. I am now a Revell customer for life. Great model, great staff, and great experience.
