I'm abut 197lbs and i got an XL. It was still too tight. So it fits smaller than it should.

Q: I am 5'6" and 198 lb. Usually wear 34" waist jeans and M/L T-shirts. Do I need to go XL just for waist?

I would say that you do need an XL because i am a body builder that weighs 200 pounds and is a 36 waist and i have a L that is just a little bit tight.

Q: How do you know whether or not you are buying an adult size? it has the size chart but when i choose the size i want, it doesn't differ m/f/k size

My son is a little shorter than you and around the same weight. He got the medium/large size so I'd suggest the same for you. The chaps can be adjusted so they don't look like it's too short on you. This is a great costume!
