Basic Optics and Optical Instruments: Revised Edition

Lots of information, fun for the collector of war surplus binoculars and telescopes. Can't beat the price, and hard to find much of this anywhere else.

Although it says revised 2011, the information in this book is old. Much of it dates back to the 1960s. The illustrations and photos have a crude look to them. The only thing in color is the book's cover. Every thing else is black & white. But the contents of the book are still valuable. The theory of light and optics has not changed over the decades. That all remains the same. The book does a good job of explaining how telescopes and binoculars work, and how to clean & repair them. Especially useful for those who want to overhaul vintage optical gear. I took a star off of the rating because the impression was given that this is a modern book about optical instruments. It is not. The bibliographical page indicates some of the material goes back to 1966.

Great simple explanation of light and basic optical instruments. Good for someone that wants to know how scopes work, not someone going for a Phd in physics. The only reason I gave 4 stars is that book is written as a US Navy course, so there is much talk of the navy and naval instruments that many people will find no use for.
