this looks to be a good chemistry set, so I give it four stars. Children no longer get to do chemistry in school, just book chemistry...so I really wanted to let my child experience this. But, some of the items listed under household items are very hard to find: food coloring made from ground beetles, copper foil, old iron nails, citric acid...having to spend $15-$20 per extra item is very hard....all told I have spent an extra $100 just to get the hard to find materials and other "household" items. I am lucky I can, if it had been my older child, I would have just broken down and cried because it would have been soul crushing. It would be nice if they sold a package of the extra weird items needed, I would have paid to get what we need in the quantity we need it.

My 10yr old loves it, but the set is rather limited in what you can do. It's true that they took out all the "fun" stuff as being too dangerous vs old time sets. Nothing will explode, burn, or even get hot. You're down to pH experiments... cool but pretty tame. One of the test tubes broke... not close to real lab quality. She loves to use the beaker to make slime projects.

Doesn't come with everything it needs. A jar labled copper foil holds a bit of copper wire -- good luck tracking down copper foil (experiment #67). There's NO FLASK (ex. # 61, 66). There are two short thin glass tubes. You need one as a pipette (ex. 38, 35, 41, 42...). Fine. You need to bend one over a flame to create a bent tube (ex. 55, 18, etc). Fine. But you are FIRST instructed (page 11) to hold one over a flame, and pull to create two 'jet nozzles.' You might want to skip that: you'll now be short a pipe. Worse, there doesn't seem to be an experiment in their booklet that uses a jet nozzle. Annoying. Also, before starting anything here you need to build two structures out of thick wire (not included). Great, trip to the art supply store for armature wire and that maybe that copper foil. And you need tools and some practice for shaping the wire. Fun enough, but galling if you wanted to start right out of the box. And don't fall for the 'jet nozzle' task.

My daughter loves this. She is almost 8. the experiments are all very quick so it never loses her excitement or attention. I wish the glass stirs were longer than the test tubes are deep. And I am yet to understand why they included 2 shorter glass stirs also. The instructions for the experiments can be a little vague (add a little of this chemical) makes it hard to know if it’s half a scoop or a granule.... either way the experiments are fun. It has been her favorite Christmas gift.

I bought this as a birthday present. My grandson, upon opening his gift found that no alcohol lamp was in the package.It clearly states that one should be there.Elenco made good on the alcohol lamp. I had a new one in about a week. Although, I feel that there could have been more chemicals in the kit

This is so great! My 11 year old and year old had so much fun with this. I loved watching the looks on their faces as they saw cooors change before their eyes. What a neat set. This is not a toy, but actual glass and chemicals. I can't wait to watch more! Get this for the science lover in your house or to inspire the hidden scientist!

This is a gift. I think there is just enough chemicals in it to make it interesting.

Bought this set for my 11 year old daughter for Christmas. I love the variety of chemicals included with the set. I think she will love it!
