The ultimate bicycle tires

When it comes to bicycle tires, a true cross tire is hard to find. Club Roost has been making the Cross Terra for decades. They make only a few treads. On a mountain bike, this tread will handle off road mud and then ride like glass on the street. Most of our suppliers have stopped carrying these beauties. The rarest is the 27 x 1-3/8". A customer came in with a 10 year old set. He loved them and wanted another set. I was pleasantly surprised to find them at Amazon at Xtreme Bike & Sport. The price was great and delivery was prompt. If you want a true dual tire, get a hold of this crew. With one rotation, you'll get thousands of miles out of them. There light and the inverted tread is the way to go.

I have used this tire for many years and is a great cross tire for really rough conditions here in CO yet performs very well on hard surfaces. Side wall will rot over time if continually exposed to direct sun.

Ideal for the right mix of conditions

Haven't had these long, so I can't comment on durability, but they seem to work on a surprising range of surfaces. I mounted them on an old Schwinn Sports Tourer I've been refurbishing. I live in an area with a mix of paved and gravel roads, along with logging roads and footpaths on a sandy soil. Road tires are impossible around here on anything but asphalt. Moreover, most of the paved roads have narrow shoulders, so you periodically have to pop on and off the pavement, which is dodgy on high pressure road tires. These tires seem to be usable on anything in the neighborhood other than loose sand; there's enough width and cushion for trails in the mild local topography, and the knobs on the sides help to climb out of ruts and onto pavement at the edge of the road. The inverse tread in the middle of the tire is indeed smooth and pretty quick on pavement - not as quick as a road-optimal tire but respectable given what else you can do. I haven't pushed the envelope on fast hard turns on pavement, and I suspect that the knobs would let you down in that situation (hard to beat a slick tire for that), but fast cornering isn't a regular part of my riding style anyway.Make sure you have room in your frame for these - the 27 x 1-3/8 designation is accurate, and on some frames the fit may be pretty tight. The tires fit fine on my frame, but they are incompatible with the fenders I had on the bike before. One of the other reviewers commented on the low rated pressure. The lower pressure is part of the point; low pressure and high volume give a smoother ride and a big contact patch. I currently weigh about 225, and I'm happy with the ride at about 60 psi. Not tires for being in a hurry, but they'll get you there over a lot of different stuff.Works for me. I hope they keep these on the market a while.

Perfect for the job

I bought these for some light cross and winter commuting, and they've served me well. They love fresh snow and are capable on packed snow, but like any unstudded tire ice is tricky. They are a bit of an SOB to mount, but that means I don't have to worry about blowouts if I want to raise the pressure above 65 because my rear panniers are full. I paid $18.70 when I bought them in September, and their price has gone up significantly since winter started. For what I paid, totally worth it 5/5. If the price stays around 25 I would probably switch to the Kendas when these wear out (hopefully a long time from now).

fits on a 27 x 1-1/4" wheel just fine

the best wide 27" tires for the price

I purchased these 8 months ago to wrap onto my 27" wheel-set for my 1983 Trek 720. These tires are of a slim-picking in this diameter, but I believe they offer the best opportunity to continue using this niche wheel size for someone looking to be on and off the asphalt. It is disappointing that there aren't many more options for the 27" wheel size, but supply and demand for these will continue to whither while consumers are moving forward in their biking demands. The Club Roost themselves are a great deal. the tread pattern is continuous enough to feel smooth on paved roads, but also offers enough traction to do some exploring on hard-pack and dry dirt trails. Going up to 1-3/8 width for 27" was a bummer at first, but I have learned that it pays tribute to the original intentions and demands of my bike at the time.Since I can't really afford to lace my original hubs to 700c rims, I have learned to make due with what I've got and would recommend giving these a try to convince you to stick with 27" for your vintage build. For the price you can't really go wrong. The rubber compound does wear a little faster than i'd hope for, but that is somewhat expected at this price range.
