Modern Calligraphy for Kids: A Step-by-Step Guide and Workbook for Lettering Fun

Not a children's book
This book is too complicated for kids. The instructions are not intuitive to children. It really frustrated my daughter. For a beginning adult or teenager, it's an okay calligraphy instruction book, but it really shouldn't be marketed as a children's book. Additionally, half the book is practice sheets. I actually wish it was 2 separate books, one with instructions and one with sheets. The binding is such that the book doesn't lay open on its own, which is annoying if you are trying to look at it while practicing. It has instructions for lettering with 3 types of pen. If you are am adult or a teen, I recommend this book, but I do not recommend purchasing it for a child unless they have already had significant experience in calligraphy.

A great book, but a little ambitious for the lower end of the age range
I was trained in calligraphy and have made money doing it on the side now and then, so it is something I know about and love. This is a very excellent book for learning calligraphy. Although the title is "Modern Calligraphy for Kids," the methods employed for learning are the classic tried-and-true ones, but they are explained very clearly and with a sense of fun that will certainly appeal to anyone who wants to learn this wonderful art form, but particularly to the specific audience the author has in mind. All of the techniques are clearly explained and illustrated, as is the unique vocabulary of letterforms.Practice strokes, using pressure and slant, are given clear instructions with due importance. The lettering styles all have lined practice sheets in the book, but underneath the lined pages is a link to where downloadable versions of those pages may be found and printed out for practice. It makes practicing super-easy!There are a number of fun projects for using calligraphy as well. The book starts out with the newer, more free-flowing styles that are currently quite popular and fun to do. I particularly like the author's Posh and Polished style - a monoline letterform based on Copperplate. True Copperplate is one of the few styles not included in the book, but it is fairly advanced and this monoline style offers a nice way to become familiar with Copperplate. In addition to the currently popular styles, the author includes classic, traditional calligraphic styles such as Gothic, uncials, and classic Italic and Italic with swashes.I'm surprised by all that the author has managed to pack into this book. I highly recommend this as a wonderful resource for learning this beautiful, special and very satisfying art form. But I do believe calligraphy is a too difficult, and therefore potentially frustrating enterprise for kids as young as nine. I first learned it in tenth grade and there were only a few of us who could do it well then.

BOOK ONLY, no pens
Super disappointed. I got this for Christmas for my granddaughter thinking she could learn calligraphy but it was only the book. The ad is misleading.

IS AN INSTRUCTION BOOK WHAT I NEED
I liked the simplicity making it interesting. I think it is worth adding to my calligraphy library. I find, for me, starting at a very beginning of learning something new has always been a benefit to me. It is what level of learning you are at and this is a new beginning for me.
