Great help in painting!
I LOVE this book. The pages are heavy duty. It is easy to turn the pages and lay it open flat. The descriptions include color pictures. I am using this book a lot. Thanks to the author and publisher!!!

Comprehensive and attractive
How I wish I had this book as a teenager when I did a lot of drawing and painting. Beautiful layout, substantial, good paper, attractive, comprehensive. Must have for a would be artist. A good learning tool, too. It's like music theory to painting.

A lot of value!!
This book comes with a lot of paint "recipes" I bought it for a gift - I would have loved to keep it for myself. Great value, filled with a lot of knowledge.

A starting point
It gives you an idea of where to start in mixing a color. I was doing a portrait of a dark skin individual for the first time and found it helpful. The book shows examples of different shades that might be found in skin and what basic colors might be in the mix. After that initial start, I had to finalize the color mixtures myself, using the paint colors I had. I didn’t use the exact recipes given which are quite complex.

Really good color reference
Unfortunately, as an artist, I am slightly color blind. I find that this helps quite a bit. I’m not guessing.

Great resource
This book is the collected work of 4 previous books, 2 of which are now out of print and getting difficult and expensive to find. It carries with it many good parts of those books, the color swatches, the easy to use mixing formulas, and the general great info about color theory.Unfortunately, it also carries with it some of the bad things, like a very exclusive paint pallet with very few substitutions for hard or impossible to find colors. These are not show stoppers, as I can usually mix in an approximate color and achieve a similar result so I’m not taking off any stars for that. The only real failure in this collected work is that they tried to replicate the spiral binding that worked so incredibly well with the smaller volumes, but fails spectacularly with a volume as thick as this one. The volume cannot lie flat like the smaller ones do, and any attempt to force it to will split the paper seams and the cover will fall off. Ironically, once you do lose the cover... it’s fine again. It lies flat again, and the title page acts like a wonderful softcover to take the former’s place. So, if you don’t mind losing the cover right away, this book will help you mix paint in so many wonderful ways. After all that: still 5 stars. It’s an irreplaceable part of my painting studio.
