Review: Shure Recommended, 3rd Party Disapproved: Affordable Mic/XLR Combo Used for Sax Recordings - 1. MFG Recommended by a Coworker; 2 Shure SM58s purchased: 1 good, 1 not so good 2. Great microphone for the money 3. Works well recording my saxophone 4. Heavier than expected 5. Should come with a microphone holder and adapter insert 6. For a little extra green, you can get the 25' XLR cable 7. Troubling experience with the last SM58 microphone (Mic head loose, no holder, insert, box was taped) Review/Opinion: Based on a coworker's opinion and my own research, I found this microphone and gave it a try for my instrument recordings. Being a third of what my coworker paid for his mic, not the SM58, is what attracted me in the beginning. I was looking at a SM57 initially until I found information stating that the SM58 could be a better device for saxophone recordings. I found a site that tested various microphones to see how the SM58 sounds. Based on that intel, affordability, and what my coworker thought about those tests, I jumped into the pool of microphone setup and purchased this mic with the XLR cable combo. I have been very happy with the recordings, both in a partial acoustic foamed environment and a fully foamed environment. Obviously, the fully foamed environment recordings are more clear and distinct. For both locations though, at an arm's length away, no clipping or distortion was experienced. The second microphone I purchased from a 3rd party: I have a similarly bad experience with an audio interface purchased through a 3rd party. i strongly suggest going through the mfr if possible. So he package was taped up, holder and insert missing, however, luckily, the XLR cable and microphone were still there! I did a mini-check on the cable and mic, which both seemed to be fine. I found later that the microphone head was loose!?! This microphone was in heavy bubble wrap when it came and the box was not damaged, but had two pieces of large white button-tape affixed. So far, this microphone has not been an issue for recording the sax and hopefully it will not be an issue in the future. Setup: The mic has an XLR port and hooks directly up to an XLR cable. In my setup, the XLR cable hooks into the audio interface, MXV2U which is power by the laptop/computer through a usb-c cable supplied by Shure's MXV2U. I am using Audacity as a DAW on a lightweight Linux OS. No issues have been experienced during my ~10 - 20 recordings. Ease of Use: Its a microphone with an XLR port. Hook it up, set it up where you need it, make sure it registers on the recording software, make some noise on a test recording, play it back and adjust the software where you want it. done. lol. As a note, I have experienced no issues with either mic, both sound great for my needs. Overall experience: This microphone MIGHT be a bit soft when it comes to speaking during sessions-- I have not experimented enough with placement yet. Research tends toward the mic being 6" to 12" away at max for normal voice recording, since I am more interested in the tonal quality of the instrument, but my voice does comes in a close second as i can learn from previous perceptions, mistakes, habits, or etc from any spoken portion or outburst, lol. Usually, the mic is about an arm's length away, which is a greater distance than recommendations. This can be corrected by either better placement or louder speech though. I suggest using the MFR, if possible, for any purchases due to experiences with one of these mics and one of the MXV2U audio interfaces have issues. The connectivity cannot be simpler, hook up the XLR cable, the sensitivity of the mic seems great, at least to my ear, it seems to pick up the instrument's sounds cleanly, it is affordable compared to other options, and I am happy overall with the purchase regardless of the oversight? of the 3rd party. Review: Awesome sound; low noise; great quality - I bought this microphone to record audiobooks and podcasts. I also have a cheap USB mic, so this was my first foray into professional equipment. I plug it into my Behringer U-PHORIA UM2 Audiophile 2x2 USB Audio Interface with XENYX Mic Preamplifier and get the signal into my laptop via a USB cable. The difference between my new Shure mic and my old USB mic is like night and day. I have a naturally flat voice, and the SM58 gives it more volume and substance. With additional post-recording processing in Audacity my voice sounds almost professional :) I am impressed by the ability of the SM58 to reject outside noise and concentrate on my voice. I place it close to my mouth (about 2 inches away) at an angle so it won't pick up the plosives. I used to hide in my walk-in closet for recordings, but now I don't have to do that. I can simply sit in my room on a comfortable chair and record. I can't comment on the durability since I've only owned it for less than a month, but the overall impression is this: it's sturdy, heavy, and made of metal. Yes, it's more expensive than the cheap USB microphones, but you can't really compare. I think it's totally worth the price. I'm an instant fan. Great job, Shure!

**Q: Feel free to laugh a bit and excuse my ignorance. I am starting voice lessons does this microphone only work with a computer? Or can I hook it up to something different? Ok no more laughing. Thank You**
A: Your question suggests you're thinking of this mic for recording rather than performing.  The SM58 is the most universal, ubiquitous, visible microphone because it's made to produce vocal sounds (musical or spoken) with faithfulness to the source while projecting that source sound at the highest amplitude without distortion.  Moreover, the mic is made to stand up under the most rough-and-tumble physical abuse every week for many years on end (I've seen SM58's that are not only scarred by charred by fire--yet they're performing as though new out of the box).  But that's not the sort of mic you would connect to a computer for recording, processing and editing. The Shure58 is a "dynamic" mic.  Recording professionals favor the more delicate "condenser" microphone, such as the ATT2020 or the Blue Yeti--both adaptable to USB connectivity.

**Q: How long is the cable that I can get with this mic?**
A: When I ordered this mic it didn't come with a cable, as I expected.  That's how it was advertised - mic only.  I knew it was a decent mic because I've owned Shure mics in the past and it is a very reputable company who makes reliable products.  If you want a cheap (but good) alternative, check musiciansfriend.com I got a bunch of mics with cables and stands for $20 each and I honestly can't tell the difference in sound quality between those and my $65 Shure mic.

A: Yes the wireless xvive u3 will work with this microphone cause the microphone is xlr and the xvive u3 is xlr and you just need to plug them into your mic and device

**Q: What amplifier or mixer [ $20- $50 ] should i buy which is compatible with sm58 ? need suggestion**
A: I’ve been using mics of all types, including this one (SM58LC, which is a DYNAMIC MIC) for more than 20 years, both in live on-stage and various recording situations. I currently own 3 that are used by the 3 Vocalists in my performing band thru a mixing board, then out to the PA at shows...or when connected directly to our digital system for recording, and have NEVER USED OR NEEDED ‘phantom power’. My equipment does have it available, but only have to switch it on when using CONDENSER MICS. These do require a source of power because their internal capacitor needs it. So not sure why anyone would say that you do, but that is incorrect.

I am going to give this microphone a solid five star rating. Here’s why first it does not color your voice. It doesn’t pick up what’s around you and it also can stand impact very well. One downside though is you have to add it to an audio interface or another speaker set up due to the fact that it is a dynamic mic, which isn’t a microphone I just used for it volume
